Yes - we don't "get" him - but perhaps that's just a Southern thing

And the reason it's not her time?

“At this point, I cannot reconcile the important responsibilities I have to my family with the additional responsibilities of the Labor leadership."

She has a young family - she was given a pair in 2010 so that her maternity leave would not result in a government defeat in the House.

Another good woman candidate sacrifices for family?

Next time around - perhaps in 6 years - the kids will be old enough that they don't need both parents constantly around ... I suspect she also wants more experience so she's more on par with Julie Bishop

Not necessarily. She quoted responsibility to family, and she does have three children, one of whom is nine years old.

Edit: Her husband became head of the NSW Department of Justice after the recent 2019 election. So he's not really going to be available to help with the family.

    I don’t get him either.

I do find some of his rants interesting, verging on funny ;).

    Agree...;)
However, IMHO we all need a strong opposition either way...that way we always keep the current government accountable or at least striving for more.....! I personally would like that.

She's Deputy PM. Doesn't that have a significant time commitment already? If she was stepping down as deputy for family then I would buy it. Not running for PM "for family"? I don't buy it. To me it is more plausible that she doesn't have the numbers or she has been told the rank and file won't support her.

    I agree.

I have no problem with a person being high income and high net worth BUT many ALP rank and file would consider her “the top end of town”.

If that's the case - then fine. It's like all the pollies who say they leave for "family reasons" ... none of our business what the real reason is, if they feel it isn't their time.

    No criticism from me

Sounds like a vote for fake-ness in politicians.

I look forward to the day when politicians (on all sides) are less fake, more truthful and more genuine.

    I know - I’m dreaming.

She is not Deputy PM. She is deputy leader of the Labor Party. And she was never running for PM. She was just sounding out leadership of the opposition.

I think that there's a huge difference in roles and responsibilities between leader and deputy leader. Really, the role of deputy leader is just to step in when the leader isn't there.

While it's quite possible that she realised that she didn't have the numbers, I also don't think that it's entirely implausible either that she really did have family commitments as well. Three kids, one of whom is nine (I don't know if the others are older or younger); her husband only became head of the NSW Department of Justice last month.

It's even possible that it was a combination of reasons.

It's not necessarily politics - this is an excuse people use in every facet of life from resigning from a job, to resigning from a volunteer position ... and in this case, it may be true that she feels the extra time required of Leader would be a step to far
