Bit of a weird one. My property manager contacted to say there is a gap in my fence and the neighbours chickens are getting through. The tenant has asked for this to be repaired. They are just in the property two weeks ago and this is how it was tenanted. I haven’t been sent pics of the hole so don’t know what it is like. But fixing the fence isn’t a completely unreasonable request.

However I did first ask if it was possible to get a hold of the neighbour regarding the chickens as obviously they seem to be the problem. Anyway the agent got back to me and said the neighbour doesn’t have a fence and would I like to arrange this to get fixed?

Surely the first port of call on this is to get the neighbour to control their chickens? I mean if the neighbour doesn’t have a fence can I just go into their garden and hang about?

What say you people of propertychat?

We'd be like: "Chickens? What chickens? Oooh yeah, I saw a big cat running around with feathers hanging out of its mouth.... sorry, I better go and check the roast chi..... uh.... the thing cooking in the oven...."

Common sense says the neighbours could easily staple up some chicken wire to the hole the chooks are getting through so their chickens remain on their side.
It's probably a council offence to not have them secured even if they are free range.
However depending on what your fence is made of it could easily be fixed with an additional paling etc or just some chicken wire on your side.
So I would just fix it on the cheap and be done with it

That is also my thought but it’s just annoying. Their chickens are their responsibility.

If the fence is damaged, it is reasonable for the tenant to ask for it to be fixed.

Is it possible the neighbours don't even realise there is a hole their chookies are taking a holiday through? They probably just have to be told.

Exactly this. Especially as the tenant has only been there for two weeks. Bad start to the tenancy if this ends up being a long hassle for the tenant. If you can find out the neighbors phone number you could give them a call and see what they say.

I have had the opposite, chickens in my yard, fully contained, neighbours dogs dig under the fence and killed them. Neighbours basically laughed it off as in "dogs will be dogs"

Now I bet you if I threaten to bbq their dogs and enjoy with a side of chips and sweet chilli sauce I will be the bad guy...

I'm sure there'd be a recipe for spit roast, battered or dagwood.

As I said it’s reasonable. It’s also reasonable to expect the neighbour to control their chickens. Also the reason I employ a property manager is so that they call the neighbours not me.

So, you neighbour doesn't have a fence o_O
Is there a fence with a hole, or no fence ????
Bloody big difference between fixing/replacing/installing ........

As you already know, basically not your issue, neighbor needs to control his chickens, or your tenants can have soup :p

I have chickens. I like the flavour of our own eggs. My neighbours used to have chickens. People in my street have them free-ranging on the front lawn. I am yet to have an argument or complaint in any direction. People are funny(and sad) sometimes.

while it may seem a trite thing to many of us, an outward looking mindset might reveal that the tennants have a phobia or a spiritual or religious issue with the chooks, like some might have with piglets, or dogs

This is what’s really confusing me. There is a fence at my property which I would have presumed is dividing otherwise the chickens couldn’t get in.

I'm guessing the PM means that the chickens aren't in a coop or fenced in area at the neighbours. But that is just my guess.

I’m also confused by the question of how they are getting through the fence if there is no fence.
