    Hi everyone ☺️

I've moved into a corner allotment house last year and I currently doing a garden makeover (the old one wasn't bad, however grass grew unsightly quickly).

After removing the existing grass and red pavings, I now have weed mats and compacted gravel overlay in their place. The driveway has also been replaced into a more stable concrete base.

Would you be able to suggest any landscaping ideas? I've heard of Japanese gardens/ adding garden beds at the side, but what would you do in this space?

How do you want to use the space?
Do you like gardening - happy to spend the time to maintain?
Do you have kids or pets who need space to run around?

I quite like privacy, so my first thought would be to plant a hedge inside the fence, something quick-growing that will grow around 2-3m tall.

What is the orientation, ie where does it get sunny/shady?

I was going to suggest the same. A Lilly Pilly hedge would look nice and offer privacy.

What do you plan to do with the gravel area? I really liked the "before" photo so perhaps choose a replacement grass that doesn't grow so fast?

Do you want or need grass? It certainly looks very bare and uninviting in those photos with the compacted gravel, but as others have asked, what sort of use will this garden have?

If this won't be a play area, I'd consider planting it out with lush greenery, bark chip and pavers.

    Thanks for your replies!

I decided to go for the safe option with a partitioned artificial lawn, and some white pebbles for contrast.

Definitely before. Plastic and rock with not a living thing to be seen has zero street appeal. I'd restore the original. Just saying as we are planning a garden for our new build corner block so have been looking for ideas also.
