Over the years I've had a lot of people send me private messages and ask if I wouldn't mind being their mentor, and I've always given them the same reply. "Why would you want just ONE mentor, when you can access the forum and have access to many?"

I've seen 'gurus' come & go. I've seen 'super investors' come & go. I've seen many offering 'MAP sessions". But at the end of the day, the very best mentoring you can get is right here, on the forum. AND the best part is that it is FREE!!

You can ask as many questions as you want & you will (mostly) get a heap of decent replies. It doesn't take long to work out those that will be helpful to your situation, and those that won't, because in reality no one person is going to be the perfect mentor for everyone else, as we all have different background, goals, beliefs, incomes, etc.

    Sage advice indeed.

Just a reminder that in our former home (well, for most of us), there was a thread on interviews - 30+ true and detailed stories of forumites, including that of Skater from 2007 (no doubt there has been some more water under the bridge since then).

Maybe when (if) @Sim implements a PC interview section - we could have some follow-ups / updates on earlier SS interviews?

Agreed. There is lots of talk about mentors. But generally speaking PC in itself is enough.

any slighty diverged from the post original headline. good on you skater. i think its just newbies and analyasis paralysis that want some one to make it easier...... i think we've all been there at some stage...yorkie

I definitely agree, this is a great place and it has grown my knowledge tenfold since I using the forums (including Somersoft).
But, I have to say that definitely also see the value in having a mentor that holds you accountable for setting and achieving goals as well as providing guidance specific for to your situation. I was fortunate enough to have a mentor when I started out that was just a friend of my mum's. She and I play a very different game these days (she focuses on capital gains and properties in America, while I go for high yield in Australia) and I haven't seen her in about a year now, but I don't think I'd be quite where I am today if it wasn't for her.

She has influenced my life so much, that we're inviting her and her husband to our wedding later this year as well.

I must admit, the new introduce yourself section of the forum is giving people the ability to share their investment journey. I think if there was interviews again, they may have to have a slightly different focus?
