    Hi all,
I am renting a new unit in NSW which is a brand new development & NBN provider asks 300/ dollar new development fee to connect. My question is it something tenants to bear or landlord? thanks in advance.

For a brand new connection the owner should reimburse you for the connection.

More specifically, it's a new development levy. It originates with NBN Co. and is passed onto the provider to pass to the end user. It's a one off cost specifically designed to be charged to the property owner of brand new homes being connected to the NBN for the first time.

NBN Co. will tell you this and so will your provider, but there are still PLENTY of Property Managers out there who will claim that it's not an essential service and you need to pay for it yourself. They are absolutely wrong.

This used to be charged to the developer who would pass it on to the buyer through the sales contract.

The developers got annoyed at having to pay the upfront cost and successfully lobbied for nbn to charge it directly so now it gets charged to the first activated service.

Definitely intended to be an owner cost but there isn't really any supporting laws in the tenancy act so it could probably go either way
