I always thought there were 5 verses to Advance Australia Fair but turns out there were originally 4 verses and now we only use 2, the modern day 2nd verse being a modified version of the original 3rd verse after Federation. More people would remember the words to the 3rd and 4th verses if they were reinstated as Waltzing Matilda and For Those About to Rock (perhaps changed to For those about to Dock... )

This makes no sense without a link to an actual new article about it.

That said, Advance Australia Fair does have some timeless messages that some people should heed: "For those who come across the seas, we've boundless plains to share"...

You want to get upset about religions and the anthem? Maybe look at what a number of private schools did, which was implementing a new second verse:
With Christ our head and cornerstone,
    We'll build our Nation's might
Whose way and truth and light alone
    Can guide our path aright.
Our lives, a sacrifice of love
    Reflect our Master's care.
With faces turned to heaven above
    Advance Australia fair.
In joyful strains then let us sing
    Advance Australia fair!

Which I'm sure you are even more upset about, right?

    Yes I am.

    Firstly it defaced our anthem.

Secondly children's developing minds have far greater capacity to learn than adults so why waste development time filling them with religious garbage.

Music : vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.

Adhan : Islamic call to prayer.

So listening or singing isn't allowed, but Adhan is ? I have spoken about this to a few muslim friends and all I get is "You will not get it. Its very complex. Adhan is allowed, music isn't".
    Errr....

    It's like a Catholic explaining Lent to a non-Catholic.

Live and let live. Who cares if you don't get it?

I like Australia because I have the freedom to do (most) things as long as they don't harm anyone else. Including not standing for the national anthem if I don't want to.

I do actually stand for the national anthem, but because I want to, not because I have to.

    3 years.

My wife wanted to do some O/S nursing work before kids in school.

I was Mr.Mom for our 4 year old son for the whole time (he ended up doing preschool and 1st Grade there).

So you have pledged allegiance to another country? What sort of Aussie are you? ;-)

I lived there for a year when I was in high school. I found out after some time that the correct thing for a foreign national is to stand at attention, possibly with your hand over your heart, but to remain respectfully silent.

If you've ever heard the Muslim call to prayer you certainly wouldn't call it music.

Personally, I will show respect for the country's sovereignty. Anyway, I think this issue may appear on The Verdict or Q & A. B-)

Singing the national anthem is permitted even during the month of mourning, This is simply a case where the educators got it wrong.

Maybe not music but its a beautiful sound, especially when echoing over a large city like Cairo or Marrakesh at dawn or dusk. I prefer it over church bells any day.

Regarding Patriotism, too much can be a bad thing, can lead to Nationalism and all the problems associated with that.

Patriotism has been used and twisted to make it one of the most destructive forces of the last century.

I was thinking along those lines but did not know enough (or anything) about this "morning period "they go through.
A national anythm is different to pop music and something for pleasure.

Seems like a do gooder teacher doing what they do best... Nothing good! The poor kids probably felt pressured to go as advised by the teacher. Now it's a massive storm in a tea cup, something the media and uneducated bogans do best, trial by social media!

My point is not about Patriotism; it's merely about respect and gratitude for the Country that is good enough to allow you to be a Citizen of it - whether you were born there or not.

This is not being taught enough anymore; we see far too many examples of folks who diss cops (and worse) who continually abuse the law and so on....no respect and tons of selfishness.

Respect and gratitude is one thing. But to many people in many countries, it goes a lot more than that. Many people think that their country is the greatest in the world, quite often to the extent that they would never visit another country because theirs is so great. Many US citizens are like this, they are notoriously insular, but they are by no means the only country which thinks like this.

Yes, we found this too; one of my son's teachers had never been outside her own suburb at aged 30, yet swore black and blue the US was the greatest Country on Earth...I bit my lip.

To be fair, I think that many Americans are kept in this frame of mind with low wages and high living costs and unable to travel outside of their country.

it is essential i understand and agree with everyones actions, apart from those i choose to ignore indiscriminately. folks not like me must also be held to a higher standard, which i will once again decide on with no consistency. i hope this clarifies things for you [/outraged daily telegraph reader]
