    Anyone been down this road

Vet to start treatment tomorrow. We dont how this will pan out, apparently even with treatment and successful management she is now prone to cataracts

Still in shock, but we are hopeful she will be OK, she is 11 year west highland terrier

    Sorry about your dog’s diagnosis.

One of my bff’s had a King Charles cavalier that developed diabetes. It had to have special food as well as shots and regular vet visits. They had another dog and it’s food was often raided. The little dog tried to steal food from the cupboard and fridge as well so they had to be vigilant with it. It never got cataracts and died of old age.

    Good luck to your puppy!

    MTR,

My dog is 12 years old and has diabetes, she has had it for sometime now. I have to inject her with insulin twice a day. She lives with it, its manageable but you need to be on top of it and do blood tests regularly to make sure she is on the correct dose of insulin. Call me if you have any questions.

At least it's treatable and will require some extra work on your part, that's the only downside when they have been with you a long time and part of the family ,it can take at lot out of you once they get sick..good luck..

    That’s rough @MTR

Our dog got cancer recently and we did everything we could to help him - which included chemotherapy treatments.

While he has passed away now we would still have done exactly the same thing. He was part of our family and we treat family well.

    Thanks.

Our dog started treatment today, the idea is to try different doses of insulin see what works.

Vet mentioned 75% seem to do OK, fingers crossed.

I will need to manage her diet so if anyone has any suggestions that would be great. Lean meat, wont be buying packaged stuff, perhaps chicken, kangaroo meat.

She has had a great day, vet very positive dropped from reading of 14 to 4 in one day. Such great news, been doing lots of research on food and stocking up

Watch the Petfooled doco on netflix.

It really annoys me that vets advertise unhealthy food like Science Diet and Royal Canine.

The main ingredients in these foods are grains. So the vets are recommending food which is pumping our dogs full of carbs.

How many wolves do you see in the wild making sandwiches? They arent designed for it at all.

We feed our dogs a cup of Holistic dry food and an egg in the morning, and then at night another cup of Holistic and a handfull if kangaroo mince.

Holistic is a good quality dry food.

Wish you all the best with your lil dog. They dont mind injections, just pinch the skin to distract them when u inject.

    Good luck :)

My other recommendation to everyone, would be to avoid the Vets that are a part of a chain. They are just all about $$$. The best vets we have ever been to are the university clinics. They know all the latest treatments and have leading specialists at their disposal. The second choice would be a local vet that isnt part of a chain.
