I left Sydney back in 2010 and have lived in a few rural areas. I have loved not living in Sydney and do not miss city living for a second. I always find it is things you do not do that you regret.

Moved from Sydney to Adelaide, fantastic. Never go back to live there again.

We lived in varying size towns and remoteness for about 13 years before moving back to civilisation - towns ranged from 130 people and 2.5hrs from the closest supermarket, to about towns of about 5000. We loved every minute and living remote was literally paradise.

We've got a happy medium now, living in Mandurah - the best of both worlds. Relatively cheap housing, work is super close, shops are walking distance, beach is on the doorstep - country lifestyle but everything we need. Perfect!

I don't know why more people don't do it. A lot depends on the work you do and if you have a family. I can't understand the logic of people who do a 2-3 hours commute a day living and working in Sydney or Melbourne just so they can stay there and usually at best just getting by.

I can't wait until the end of the year and we do it.

One thing I am interested to find out is how long it takes for the beach lifestyle to become our new normal and no longer feel like we are on holiday :).

This! A million times this!!! Any city over 100k is going to have all the infrastructure available. If you can get work it's a total no-brainer. The lifestyle is just so much better.

Life is too short to spend it stuck in traffic.

I keep pinching myself up here realizing just how good I've got it.

I am from Newcastle originally (less than half the size of Adelaide) and Sydney was a necessity and logical move for work back in late 90's. Never had any real love for the city.

Now that you are in Adelaide (I assume) do you prefer it to Newcastle in 2017?

Come up! We have an airport, festivals...this weekend a Viking funeral (naturally)...Winter in Darwin is awesome.

However...give it 5 months and the tables will turn. Can't have everything!

Nice one. I'm from Newey too. Also moved to Sydney for work in late 90's. Still here. I'm good with Sydney for now its working for me. But I clearly get the pros and cons.

I move from one continent to another every 5-7 years since I was 17, I've really enjoyed the gypsy life style. I was going to move to San Fran after a few years in Melbourne, but I met my partner so it seems I won't go anywhere any time soon. :)

Haha this is a mindset thing. I can honestly say I pinched myself every SINGLE day for 2 yrs when I left. Then it gradually wore off and I started taking my new locale for granted but I still prefer it and feel waves of gratitude and know I made a good choice. I verbalise the gratitude to my wife weekly and despite the challenges of life with young kids without the grandparents free childcare on tap I have never regretted it. I still surf, run, ride and fish as often as I can and whenever I do I feel like I am on holidays again. I honestly love travel but no longer feel the need to travel for holidays like I did when living in the city because I get outside and in the nature regularly. Do it if you can.

I can't wait to leave the bush and go closer to the beach, again!

Will never ever live in a city again, although Perth in the early 80's was great as a youngster.

    @Jess Peletier
I have history with Mandurah/Dawesville and totally get what you are saying.
