    It was an excellent evening.

The film was very powerful, very traumatic. The injustices which were perpetrated were unbelievable.

The panel was very good - one professors and two associate professors - who had not previously seen the film who gave their opinion. Their.ooinions we're good. It was ironic that the screening took place on the day that another black man was executed in Alabama - Nathaniel Woods - who was convicted and executed despite the fact that another man had killed three police officers. That man admitted the crime and is still on death row.

There was some discussion on the death penalty worldwide, but then further discussion on the incarceration rates of aboriginal people in Australia. The numbers quoted were very similar to stats quoted in this article . According to this associate professor, Aboriginals are the most incarcerated people in the world. According to the article, rates doubled between 1990 and 2010. Rates are particularly high in WA. While alcohol and related issues are a factor, other things are more so. Aboriginals are 3.2 times as likely to be pulled over by police than non aboriginal drivers in WA - but have the same likelihood of getting caught be a speed camera. Many live remotely without any form of public transport, so if somebody loses a licence, they may have no alternative. Aboriginal people are 15 times more likely to be arrested for swearing of offensive behaviour.

Rates are only getting worse. And I suspect that it becomes a cycle.

This is absolutely stunning to me. I can't understand how a legal system can serve it's people so poorly. I sincerely hope our system is better, but based on the information you provided I sadly suspect it is not.

It's been pointed out to me that this state (Alabama) which has high rates of execution also has very restrictive abortion laws because if the sacredness of life.

There is at least now a group dedicated to helping people wrongly convicted, the two lawyers depicted at the start were the start of that group. There was something about one person on death row found to be not guilty and exonerated for every ten executions.

But at least something is being done there. I can't see much being done here for the appalling aboriginal statistics.

Lol, couldn't stop myself from commenting on this as it was the first thing I stumbled upon after listening to a podcast about the 74 original. Tobe Hooper filmed it during an unusually hot Texas summer in 1973. The actors shot day after day in unwashed clothes (Gunnar Hansen's pants were said to stand up unoccupied by the end of it all). The uncomfortable, dirty shooting conditions really contribute to the atmosphere in the final cut.

Alas the actors, who agreed to a cut of the profits for payment, earned barely anything for their efforts despite the film doing very well commercially- the only distributor willing to take on the movie at the time, the same mob which distributed deep throat, were involved with organised crime so had no shame of sending out cheques to them literally in double digit figures (Hansen, Leatherface himself, was only paid $47.07).
