I went to see this movie during the week. It's an Australian movie, set in Canberra, based on the true story of an ANU student (Anu Singh, coincidentally named after her university) who kills her lover, Joe Cinque, by heroin overdose after knoking him out with rohypnol. It took almost the whole weekend for her to finish off the deed.

They had two farewell parties beforehand. Anu announced that they were going to commit suicide together- apparently unbeknown to Joe. Nobody involved in the dinner parties took any subsequent action.

It was very interesting to see the events as they unfolded.

I subsequently bought the book on Kindle and I'm getting through it.

The book starts where the movie left off- at the trial. In some ways it's a misnomer to name the movie after the book. The drama of the book (one which my daughter studies at year 12 some years ago) is the unfolding of what happens in the court; the reaction of the participants and especially of Joe's parents. The "consolation" of the title is the partial bringing to justice of the perpertrator (who was sentenced to 10 years for manslaughter, and got out after four for good behaviour).

The movie is worth a look. 3.5 stars out of 5.

Sounds like an unusual story. Will check it out - I love true crime stories, especially aussie ones.

We definitely have a creepy style all of our own.
The other case I'm interested in is the one where the beautiful young woman went down the garbage chute in a tall residential building. Died from the loss of blood while trying to get out. Had a drug problem. Bf's parents high flyers in the courts.

There's a lot of info out there about the case as well. She earned a PhD in criminology about women offenders, based on interviews with imprisoned women- some of which were conducted while she was in gaol.

The time she served also took into account the time she had been held pending the trial. She was imprisoned in 1997, convicted in 1999 and released in 2001. She did go back for a stint for breaching parole by smoking marijuana but was later released on a technicality.

Think the garbage chute idea just reminds me of when I worked at Big W - there was a "compactor" you would throw all the empty boxes down, you'd fill it up and lock the large metal door. You would then press a large red button to start it and walk away. The "compactor" would do it's job and convert the cardboard boxes into compacted cubes. I'd always imagine someone could get thrown in there, the door would be locked closed. No way out....
