I really like my local Liberal MP but will be voting Labor. I would have voted Labor last time if they weren’t attacking negative gearing.

No mention of the Palmer United party. Or nationals ?? Nats etc get a big vote in the regions.

Saw palmers latest media bombardments for regional fast trains. Brilliant idea. Just like say Italy, Germany and Austrian trains and some in France, UK etc which offers all that. So it will cost at least $120 a day to go to and from work ? The guy must have fallen on his head from a tree.

It does sell to the simpletons out there.
Fast train to city from the country side.
In theory it sounds like rainbow and sunshine.
But reality to make it happen and affordable to the average Joe and Jane.
That is another kettle of fish.

Really? It's my issue for trying to have an actual discussion about the topic? Pretty happy with my level of understanding on it, if you want to **** stir maybe a /sarcasm tag is appropriate otherwise people might waste their time reading you posts as meaningful discussion

Well, yes, you've got to be careful which one you vote for & know where the preferences are going. Having independents in the mix makes them slightly more honest. Actually I'm not sure honest is the word I'm looking for, but you get the drift.

.... and it could force a minority government making idiot decisions much harder to push through... admittedly it also slows the whole government machine but is probably the best outcome from a bunch of very average voter choices.

Do people remember Julia Gillard? She was in a minority government. While she was Prime Minister, her government passed over 550 pieces of legislation (more than Mr Rudd achieved) and required considerable negotiation. Pretty useless stuff such as a Carbon Tax (gone,) NDIS (now *******ized to a degree), Helpline for GPs to access specialist advice, paid parental leave and a few matters equally of little consequence.

Minority government can be good if the concepts brought forward have value and input from across the board is necessary to pass the legislation.

True however a majority government with either of the current mainstream options would arguably be a worse scenario presently....

Just curious, what do you mean by 'know where the preferences are going'?

In the Senate, voting above the line means that the party gets to decide where your votes go when that party is eliminated during the count. Because party you vote for gets to choose where your preferences go, then you could see your votes going to another party that you may not like.

House of Representatives provides for multiple counts of ballot papers to occur to determine who has acquired an absolute majority of the total votes which is more than 50% of formal votes.During the counting process, votes are transferred between candidates according to the preferences marked by voters.
