Australia’s 10 Most Liveable Cities and Regions: Ipsos

This article from The Urban Developer last week has Australia's ten most livable capital cities, and the ten least livable, and the ten most livable rural centres and the ten least livable.

"When it comes to the liveability of our cities, Australians consistently select “feeling safe” as their favoured attribute that makes somewhere a good place to live."

I see Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba and Moreton Bay south listed in the most livable areas :)

I'd rather live in Perth than Sydney any day.

Heard Perth is beautiful and relaxing. Gotta check it out one day.

I just wonder how the 10,000 participants were selected in this survey?

Employment aside why would anyone want to live in the hustle and bustle of Melbourne or Sydney ?

Give me Darwin, Perth, Hobart, Bris or Adelaide any day for capital cities

I'd never want to live in Sydney! Too crowded, busy, too far to get anywhere, too high a cost of living.

Melbourne would be ok if within the tram network as makes it easier to get around, but weather there sucks.

Adelaide has its quirks, not enough infrastructure, crap trading hours, lots of bogans, but is a nice place to live overall. Is a little bit cold in winter (not as cold as Canberra and some other places), but combine with Gold Coast for best of both worlds IMHO.

The Townsville Bulletin was most offended.:D

I have lived in three cities: Perth (which is rated at the top), Canberra (which doesn't get a mention) and Townsville (at the bottom). IMO, which is the nicest place to live depends on your preferences.

Perth is great if you are wealthy and can afford to live by the beach near the city and pretty good if you live along a train route, but the scale of the sprawl can make transport and traffic a big issue otherwise, and if you are lost in the endless suburbs, it can be quite dull.

Canberra is great if you don't mind the cold -- a good size, generally lots to do and a high level of education and employment.

Townsville is great if you don't mind the heat and aren't too bothered by somewhat elevated crime and unemployment statistics. A fantastic and accessible environment, very affordable housing, great public facilities, lots of markets and arts, so lots going on. I don't mind the heat, so this is my favourite of the three at the moment and where I am choosing to live now.

Feeling safe is the top priority on the survey. Apparently the crime in Townsville is a real turn off

While that is true, Townsville crime, though twice that of Brisbane, is not so high that I (as a small woman) feel uncomfortable walking alone in the city at night. Australian crime rates are low by international standards, wherever you live.

If I don't worry about employment or business opportunities, just spend and live, Adelaide as a city would be good.

Indeed. Some people were perplexed when Lonely Planet put it on the top of their list all those years ago but I wasn't. It remains an underrated paradise.

    Another vote for Perth here.
I've lived in Adelaide, Darwin, Sydney and stayed in Brisbane Melbourne Canberra numerous times over the years. Keep reverting back to Perth like a homing pigeon. It has the right population density for my liking, as well as consistent beautiful weather and relaxed coastal lifestyle.

In my youth, I would've given my right arm to live in Melbourne, but now...no thanks.
