I see it sort of as treating myself when I do buy something. Or one time, there was a special on toilet paper that brought it down to around 10% of its regular price and I stocked up. I still have toilet paper and that deal was on 18 months ago.
The last thing I bought for example were 2 $30 Woolworths mobile starter packs for $4 including postage. I gave those to my parents, who will be driving around Australia for the next three months and this will provide them with cheap internet.
Then I was going to buy undies that were 80% off, but I was too slow (my wife told me that I need new ones).

So yes, sometimes it's a bit of a waste of money (wireless security cameras, for example), but more often than not, it isn't.
If I do need to buy something, I will always check them first as well, in case there's a special.

a huge over statement... people buy what they want to buy. May be the desire to buy something wasn't too strong before they say ozbargain but hey... that is what a SALE for.. so you can afford stuff you want, dont need. Stuff you need you buy them anyway

Install? There are better torrent options if you're going the dodgy route surely.

It's dodgy if it's allowing you to do something illegal.
I'm not altogether against it, just saying.

Some great ideas here and I will definitely be implementing a few.

I think there needs to be a line drawn between being a tight a.. AND saving money you don't need to spend.
I don't think you necessarily have to save/invest the money you can save either, if it goes towards something that makes you happy and the time taken is minimal then I don't think that makes you tight, I think it makes you smart.

My example I saved $40 a month for a 10 minute phone call. I don't neccessity put that on the home loan, it might buy a bottle of wine to share with the wife at dinner for example, point being its better in my pocket for me to enjoy than Foxtel.

Compare that to a lady on current affair who teaches houses to save money, now she is a massive tight a..!!! Her tips include filling shampoo bottles with water (just use less?) cooking army pot size dinners to freeze (great soup for the 16th night running) and treating the kids once a month to 1 new item of clothing from the op shop.

That's not thrifty, it's just mean.
Fair enough if you're super poor, but if it's just for the heck of it with no reward...
