Here's another one.....doesn't work for everyone but worth a ponder.

Try and be a one car household.

Buy a PPOR close to public transport, ride share, get a car for work, become a cyclist.....whatever it takes!

Cars cost roughly around 100 bucks a week to keep (once you factor rego, tyres repairs, insurance, depreciation, fuel etc...)

That's like 5k per annum or if you own the car for 3 years...15k!

If you think about it in percentages...The less you earn, the bigger the difference it makes. If you're on an average wage one car can make up 10 percent of your take home pay! Ouch!

Doesn't work for everyone...cause you know life and all.....but if you can do it....it makes a helluva difference

Adopt a minimalist lifestyle and when you buy things you need, pretend it is two years ago and only buy items that were available then. This will save you at least 50% of your current 'stuff' expenses. Invest the savings and accelerate your progress towards financial independence.

I did the same thing against energy australia, basically went on
    energymadeeasy.gov.au

check it up every few months or so (takes up 5 mins of my time) and see if theres a better provider doing a good deal

call up energy australia to match and almost always get it ;) ..

still havent hit the solar bandwagon though, but got plans to knock down / develop in a few years time so it isnt worth it for me right now.

    Legend -
This post prompted me to make a phone call that will save me close to $300 for the next 12 months :)

Phone call took 14 mins, total rate of $1285/hr. ;)
    Love it.

    18% for electricity,
    14% for gas.
    Origin.
Didn't really want to change providers as direct debit etc all set up.

Yeah I realised that about 11 years ago when selling my first car so I was more aware of the depreciation factoring in.
5k every year is a god damn lot of money!

'Reject shops' or 'two dollar shops' are a bit of a gold mine for the household staples.. I went it to pick up some toothpaste and shower gel and found they sold our babies 'S26 Gold formula' (one of the premium brands) for $5 cheaper per tin.. That adds up to quite a lot over a year.

I came across this one today. Couldn't be simpler. Easily controlled. Will save you heaps compared with the average punter.

Don't know if it's already been posted but avoid contracts with telcos in the disguise of "but the phone makes up for it". Just get a prepaid plan from amaysim or some such provider and save at least a grand over 2 years.

If you are an Android user, a $300 to $400 is phone all one needs with 90% specs of a high end $1000 phone. The Motorolas, Xiaomis and HTCs of the world.
If you are an Apple user - may god have mercy on you.

Sure, if buying refurbished/old models work for you. Apply the same logic to Android phones, can get a brand new but model clearance stock for $200 to $250. Now that's apples :p

    Couple of my tips:
    • Living in Melbourne, I use public transport daily to get into the city for work. In an attempt to reduce congestion on trains and trams, if you touch off in the morning before 7am, you ride for free!
    • Fee free credit card sign ups with QFF bonus points (ANZ 75,000, StGeorge, 30,000, Jetstar 40,000, BankWest 40,000, NAB 70,000). I've now accumulated enough points for 2 people return almost anywhere in the world. All just by changing my direct debits, and shopping to the credit cards.
    • Buying in bulk - groceries etc.. (personal favourite is: 5kg bags of basmati rice from Coles are on special once a month for $8 - some people at work buy those packet rice for $2 a pop which is 1-2 serves....
    • Cooking in bulk and freezing - I can make a weeks worth of nutritious lunches for about $10-15 depending on what protein source I use (chicken, beef, fish..). Go out for lunch for 1 day, and that's the same amount, as a minimum
    • Shop online - I've saved a ridiculous amount of money by shopping online (clothes, shoes, household items etc.. PLUS you have it delivered to your door. Cheaper and more convenient, can't ask for more than that!
    • Use an insurance and mortgage broker - don't think I need to say anymore on this topic. I'm sure you all already use this.
Hope there are a few tips that others can use!

I think you'll find that lurk is known by the insurance companies, and have factored into premiums quite nicely.

Nah...end of June is for mugs. June is high volume month so no incentive. Short month (April is great with Easter and ANZAC day) or better still between Christmas and New Year. Monthky volume determies overall unit price so sometimes selling at a "loss" to make next bracket boosts overall profit.

Alternately fax/email a dozen dealers with your specs and make sure you disclose who's been asked to bid...quickly cuts through the small talk.

What is this touch off before 7am deal?

Never heard of it, is it a glitch or legit?
