Couple of years away yet. Plan is to finish here, and take a long mini-retirement.
Havent decided on a long drive around Aus, a multi-country sail, or a relaxed lifestyle in a cheap country.

Lots of deciding yet to be done. Maybe we will do all of them :p

That's the go! I'm no sailor but a guy I worked with was and we were both campers. He told me about sail boat, yacht, cattermarang (lol spelling) things that are trailer sized and in Europe they use them as a "caravan"on land then dropinto water to go sailing

Ive never sailed either. But have always had and been around boats.

I know a lot of people who sail between countries. Their adventures have me in aw.

Here is an interesting video of a foreigner who is living in Khon Kaen Thailand for US$500 per month.

He shows his apartment, inside his room, local markets etc. Pays 3500B per month for the room, including wifi = AUD $135 per month

Could be a good proposition for early retirement for some I guess. Certainly mega mega cheap. I can't say it screams out with appeal to me. In Europe some people are moving to Hungary and similar countries for very cheap housing and cost of living. None of these places are really international destinations of choice for spending time though and for good reasons, i.e. poor infrastructure, corruption/crime, not much to do outside of sitting at some bar. I'm not knocking it, each to their own but I can't see the appeal for myself. I guess there are options to pay four times more upwards, still very cheap for us, and living in relative luxury. Would be good to see something similar to this for Portugal or other places.

Is fiddly but a good website to compare cost of living between places in different parts of the world

If you can get that for $500 imagine what you could get for say $2000 per month!!

Not every one's cup of tea, but could be an opportunity to retire 15 years earlier for some.

Even just to chill out for a few months - get in some meditation.

I know... it sounds bloody awesome!

Thank you for this thread and making me sadder...

One big disadvantage that is glossed over in the blogs is job security. Sure I can quit, but I don't want to spend half my 'retirement' worrying about getting a job when I get back, doing interviews via skype... yuck. That's not to mention the prospect of not getting a decent gig.

One other thing to consider, you might technically have to tell your bank when your situation changes, such as losing job.

Hows all the mini-retirements going? Since I can work anywhere, I am moving away from the mini-retirement mode. I used to go overseas and just try to shut down for a month at a time. Now I am still going to go overseas but perhaps have mini breaks of a few days then work a few days and break a few days.

Great timing re this thread popping up again. I am seriously considering taking a mini retirement for the next 2-3 years.
This coincides with the sale of an IP each financial year for the next 2-3 years. The profits will pay out the loans of the IPs we wish to keep. If I keep my job and sell the IPs - I will be paying tax in the highest tax bracket.
Interestingly since seriously considering this option I have slept well.

That place looks pretty aweful to me. I would not live there by choice.
Unfortunatley there' not many videos showing what a similar life style to what we have here costs. If it even exists.

Well it has been the most common and effective way to FIRE for at least 2000 yrs. So she was'n't wrong.

Not a great attitude but… she’s not technically wrong.
