Census data is too old to make meaningful insights. What are other ways for finding current migration data in Australia? And where do you find that information in a city / suburb level?

Ken McElroy suggests checking moving company's like U-haul but I can't see any publicly available data here. He also suggests checking out of state driver licence data which doesn't appear available here either.

    Any other ideas?

I don't have any answers to your questions but quite enjoy Kens insights. He seems to be putting up some interesting material almost daily at the moment.

Hi Solotak - to clarify, are you talking about migration data showing people moving across different suburbs and states within Australia over a particular period of time? How about people migrating from overseas to Australia?

ABS publishes 3218.0 - Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2018-19, once each year.
Estimates are available at Statistical Area level 2 (SA2), basically the suburb level or a couple of suburbs.

ABS 3101.0 is published quarterly, with population estimates at the state and national levels.

So you can use 3218.0 extrapolating trends as per 3101.0 - much more recent data than census data.
They use things like Medicare addresses and get a pretty good handle on the trends.

Yes basically net migration inflows and outflows of Suburbs/Cities/States. So that would mean it would include overseas migration.

there was an interesting article written by the NY Times in relation to migration patterns due to global climate change, especially Mexico where warm weather was making farming impoverished and sending husbands off over the border, this led to more interesting modelling of how warmer climates will affect migration as land becomes unusable
