What do people think of the following suburbs for a first time home buyer looking to buy a small 2 bedroom unit, townhouse or home?

Preston West, Pascoe Vale, Reservoir, Glenroy, Campbellfield, Broadmeadows and Epping

Or is it better to buy a 1 bedroom apartment in the inner north?

Depends a lot on your preferences.
Are you familiar with these suburbs? Go spend some time in them, different days, different times - weekends, evenings, nights.

IMHO Pvale, Reservoir, Glenroy, Broady, Preston are not really "outer"....

Preston West and Preston proper are definitely inner Melbourne and a very different price point.

I'd say it's going to boil down to what's more important to you. If it's lifestyle, inner north near cafes, restaurants etc. If you're after growth, I'd be looking at a 2-3 bedroom options a little further out. OR, you can rent inner North and buy further out for investments purposes.

Been living in Hadfield for a few years now and really enjoy the suburb. Pretty easy getting to the City too. Plenty of townhouses and units being built at the moment.

I was looking at those exact suburbs and been researching for at least 1 year and a half and finally decided on Preston West. It has the best of everything and I see huge potential in this surburb.
