Our worst flu season ever saw just over 1,000 confirmed deaths - without any lockdowns or social distancing or mandated masks.

We've seen 1,420 deaths so far from COVID with lockdowns etc, and based on infection and death rates in other similar countries (> 2,000 deaths per million population in the UK and US) - we could have expected in excess of 50,000 deaths from COVID if we treated it like the flu.

So now that we've got high levels of vaccination - we should not see those death rates - but until the entire country has sufficiently high vaccination rates, we are still putting a lot of people at risk.

    Australian vaccination rollout plots

Australia is expected to reach 90% double dose of 12+ nationally by Dec 4th

But if we break it down by state, we get a different picture - expected date of 90% 12+ double dose:
    • ACT: Oct 31st
    • NSW: Nov 15th
    • VIC: Nov 25th
    • TAS: Dec 13th
    • SA: Dec 23rd
    • WA: Dec 27th
    • QLD: Jan 7th
    • NT: Feb 9th
The NT is only at 53.6% double dose coverage right now, compared to NSW 69.5%!

I'm only looking at these figures on a state level - if you break it down by region, you'll find the cities are generally at much higher vaccination levels than the regional areas.

But in general - once we get to 90% or more of the whole population fully vaccinated, the risks of hospitalisation and death should drop dramatically.

We need to make sure that everyone who wants a vaccine (including in regional areas) has had an opportunity to get their two doses before we fully open up.

Also - don't forget that there are a significant number of immunocompromised children out there under the age of 12 who aren't even eligible for vaccination yet!

Great news, Dan just made it clear he'll not follow the NSW model of letting anti-vaxxed wait out 4 weeks until they can just go on with their life, virtually making vax an option.

In VIC, if you decide to be free and not vax, you'll also allow those who chose to protect themselves and others (aka, more then 90% at the time of this post) to have their freedom to not have you around.

I hope other states will do the same, making sure that NSW anti-vaxxed are locked in NSW and not moving around the country.

I see that Melbourne has had anti vaxxer protestors today in full action.

Are these the same idiots who were protesting the lockdown who changed to the trendy cause, or another deluded bunch?

I’m going to day to the non loonies in Melbourne - other states will welcome you! Just note, Sydney’s weather is a lot warmer than Melbourne’s.
