Although this article is centered on Victoria, the same concepts of State Governments abandoning regulatory requirements to private industry could also easily apply.

    And not only building issues.

Wish I knew how to bring back the idea of centralisation as it is basically about the long and short term impact on people. Sadly I don't have a magic wand.

Here is another one but sightly different in nature - this time not about building but more with contiminated land underneath which is stopping people from moving in:
Building crisis: Fourth abandoned tower is 'one of many more to come'

The City of Sydney said in a statement the development approval for Erskineville’s Sugarcube Apartments and Honeycomb Terraces was conditional on the developer resolving issues about “heavy metals, hydrocarbons and asbestos” in the ground and “contaminated groundwater”.

    Cheers,
    David

I think it's about time buying new property came backed with the same sort of guarantees as whitegoods.

This whole Russian roulette thing isn't working out so well....

The builders and planners have to be held accountable. Unfortunately, current law doesn't hold them to it.

Make the mortgages non-recourse then most of these types of developments would never happen

Awful. Saw some poor bugger bought an apartment in this complex a couple of months before everyone was evacuated.

What happened here prompted us to sell our unit. It had big problems, not nearly on the same level, but we decided to GTFO and so glad we did.

I think that is what the plan is.

The lack of accountability for the builders here is mind boggling. You get a better warranty when purchasing a toaster...

For sure, back in the dark old days a builder got beheaded for building a crappy house or even a hamlet (one for the developers..:). Building ones home was important then and the same importance applies now. It is up to people to lobby their local member to close the loopholes and make Acts that leave the builders, planners and developers no way of getting out of poor workmanship. If we don't get developments improved well so be it. I cant understand why these large developments get through the system. Too many people talk about it but take no action until it happens to them. We all seem to know what the problem is.....
