Who is Martin North and why are we giving him attention?

Is he worth emulating? Does he have a multi-billion dollar empire?

He has a YouTube show talking about domestic and international markets with a strong focus on Ozzie property market.

If I have enough spare time in my hands, I can do the same!

He collects and analyses what I think is the largest regular survey of (52,000) Australian households about their financial position.

I wonder how he gets this data. Privacy anyone?

What do you mean "Privacy anyone?", do you think he is stealing bank statements out of mailboxes or something?

I expect he pays a company to collect the data on his behalf, using surveys conducted with consent to use the aggregated data.

This page is probably offline because the questions or some of the methods changed, but it provides some insight into the questions that were asked through the data collection process when they were only collecting from 26,000 households: The Anatomy of Mortgage Stress

No, you don’t have to. You can also opt not to read this thread.

PC is full of property bulls. So a contrarian view from Martin North doesn’t hurt. I still make up my own mind and act independently and take responsibility for my actions. I am not holding anyone responsible for their opinions.

YouTube is free, anyone can have any view. Do you hold people at AFR accountable because you paid for the paper? Are the politicians accountable for the rosy picture they keep painting and responsible for lowering the deposit rates for retirees?

You can also opt not to reply too, but guess you're not a property investor.

I heard he wrote book predicting a crash in Australia during the GFC but I couldn’t find this book anywhere when I searched for it. This would be a solid hit to his credibility if true.

Not really. The causes that led to a prediction can still hold true even if they didn't become true.

If someone is heading toward a cliff and someone makes the prediction that they will drive off but superman saves them last minute it doesn't make them not credible for not being correct.

Australia avoiding a recession during the GFC is complex.

He was 100% correct but reality got in the way - may be... but hey, causes+prediction+true = must be true!

Yes- 100%. Superman not only saved us all but gave us c50% growth since then. All hail to the superman.

Agreed- especially where facts don't back up a claim, we can always blame complexity.. because reasons.. you know!

The unfortunate reality is that dumb luck works.

if superheroes exist then they should take superman arriving into consideration. Another issue with North is the publicity provides good marketting for his business so he has a conflict of interest to keep saying whatever is necessary to remain relevant. Which is why I prefer analysis like Shane Oliver who seem much more neutral.

Basically he went on The Project last year and said that. Which means... buy now!
