Yes, I got that completely wrong.

Blaxland, with 25% Arabic speakers, got the lowest yes vote in NSW.

Huge differences in NSW. Really interesting. Highest 'Yes' at 83% and the lowest at 25%. Queensland was a surprise - I thought there would have been a much stronger 'No' vote.
One of my girls is doing urban geography at school. It will be interesting to look at the results by seat with other demographic stuff laid over it.
There will be a few parties in my suburb tonight - Grayndler electorate 79.9%.

I thought country NSW might have been more conservative. The country people we listened to on the John Laws show a month ago all were voting "no" for the strangest reasons (thinking they would be forced to use unisex toilets was a biggie ).

Of the nearly 200 calls (not all put to air), the no vote was running at about 80%. But obviously that is the demographic who listen to John Laws (and Alan Jones no doubt). My MIL listens to those stations and thinks Alan Jones is a wonderful man who makes a lot of sense . My MIL also thinks Pauline Hanson is a wonderful woman who makes a lot of sense. It made me concerned, but then I thought about the cities that would outvote them with yes votes.

A friend in Emerald in Queensland said there seems to be good support for the "yes" vote (anecdotally of course) and when I said I thought country people might be much more conservative, she said not in her experience in her town of about about 15,000 people.

Fifty years ago things would have been different, but that holds true for the big cities too. We are finally growing up.

But I thought "happy" and "married" were mutually exclusive? ;-)

Staying married is the hard bit though!

Really interesting. I can understand people closer to the city being more progressive, dislike this middle and outer suburban Sydney voting result. It is what it is though.

You may have underestimated the impact of a nasty "no" campaign. People I spoke to who were on the fence or ambivalent became a lot more interested once the nastiness and bully tactics from the "no" campaign started.

There are articles written about a lot of things. A lot of them turn out to be wrong.

"Yes" vote didn't fail. The nasty "no" campaign must have had a bigger impact than people thought. I know the bully tactics of the "no" campaign upset a lot of people I spoke to.

And the "yes" campaign suffered badly when an employee was sacked for having an opposing view to her boss.

I found a lot of the "no" campaign to be nasty because it was packed full of dishonesty and homophobia but I am referring to individuals campaigning for "no" all over social media spreading hate and lies about gays and being bullies in general. We even had this on this forum.
