Somebody I know got a ripper of a price at an auction on a nice suburban home during the Sydney boom.. only about a year ago.

She took her family to the auction with her (young kids) and while she was there pre-auction, her kids ran around the house saying things like "I want this room mummy", "Wow I can't wait to play soccer here", etc. Other people saw this and lost heart to keep bidding past a certain number during the auction process especially when they saw her and her children/husband and how much they wanted it. One older lady even told her "We wanted this house but we could tell it would be better for you so we stopped bidding".

You'd be surprised how some emotional connections can influence an auction. She swears it was a bit of divine intervention and "this was meant for me", but I think its just human characteristics.

Lol, I remember this guy. The auctioneers invited him back after the auction to do an interview and discuss his strategy. He's actually a very successful entrepreneur.

Let me see if I can find the video.

    Interesting!

So, I'm off to an auction this Saturday and will do some bidding for the next aquisition:)

Are there any strategies you can recommend?

good on him - too often people follow the herd and bid/act according to what they read in books and how society perceives them to be - end of the day he had a plan, executed and won with some out there tactics which no one was prepared for - just because its completely different and new doesn't mean it doesn't work!

whether he purchased at good value is another story

They own all the property you can see in the video :)

They save extra money by using bikes and scooters and legs only :)

Hehe, I remember one auction, where I turned up mid week for the open....only person there. Hubby went on the weekend, again, only person there. We always dress down, when looking at property, and gave different contact information & Agent (out of area) thought he had two unique bidders who had both given a low-ball on what they could afford. It was a mortgagee sale, so that amount was set as the reserve.:D

Yep, we do the same thing. I always wear an old T-shirt, grotty shorts, thongs (Aussie version), ... you get the picture :).

In most cases, REAs never approach me - I assume they think I should be looking for accommodation under a bridge :). That is the way I like it.

Also, we leave the BMW at home and take the wife's Tiguan.

In 2011, I did an inspection in Melbourne for my son. The REA turned up in his Merc, his dark blue 'power' suit, ...; I rocked up dressed as described above and I borrowed my son's 25-year, clapped out 1986 Corona.

The look of disdain on the REA's face was priceless :).

He must have been totally overwhelmed a couple of weeks later when we were signing the contract post-auction, having arrived in the same car and same clothes.

This is not the classic bidder who out bids himself I realise now.

    What a bloody champion!!

If our son didn't sell his now 31 year old clapped out Corona, we would be using that, only just for property inspections.

Is that Toyota common enough :)?

    It's a third by captialisation not a quarter ;)

I think it's around Malvern/Caufield and very orthodox. @Leo2413 is our expert.

Haha no expert but i do have family in that area in Melb and yes it's quite an orthodox area. Its kind of equivalent to North Bondi in Sydney but a larger Jewish population there.

That's exactly what I thought , though could equally apply to The Wife who came straight off the same set of plans as Deb .
