Santa Monica is a good place to stay. Some sketchy people there but everything is in and around the mall.

Get cash passport from travelex or DynCorp us dollars will be preloaded and you will not have to pay the conversion fee

Shopping is good. The normal shopping centres are the same price as Australia the outlets are cheaper depending on what you want. It did not find prices too much different to australia apart from a few things one to convert the money into aud.

Did you find the same prices? Pretty much everything I found was cheaper, from Levis, Nike, perfume/makeup, electronics, laptops, games. Even better on sale at Nordstroms, Macy's etc...

I agree the when they have sales at Nordstrom and Macy's are super cheap
Outlets are cheap as well I found Nike and adidas prices comparable to aus prices not much difference at the Outlets

Ralph Lauren was not that much cheaper compared to aus.

Tommy hilfiger at the outlets was dirt cheap even after the currency conversion probably about $30 difference on polos.

We slept in a park in east LA for a couple of nights. It was ok, some good mexican restaurants around, but the sprinklers came on in the morning. Our stuff was in a van but we slept outside on the grass usually. Later found a lake a bit east of LA and slept on the shore there. Did this for a month in California, there are a lot of places you can free camp.

I would say Bridgewater.. Except worse because of more poverty and higher population density! It was fine of a day time... Just as soon as it got dark it got very seedy very quickly... Context: I am not far off 6 foot and a country girl.. So I am not easily intimidated...

Don't worry about it... Yanks aren't tall ;) Plus they are larger which makes them look even shorter ;)
