I coughed up the $15,000. It looks like the buy price will be less than $7.98

I have gone with VGS too, just easier.
Also I like the "all in one" developped market product.
    It's good.

I'm trying to decide whether to BPay to participate in Argo SPP. Given the lower share prices last couple of days, is it better to just buy at this price through ordinary trade rather than via SPP (the volume-weighted averaged price over 5 days)?

VGS - recent volatility may present good buying

Anyone know a site where I can see a history of yield as it changes each day - ie current dividend as a percentage of whatever the share price was on that particular day, shown over multiple past years?

Like the way you think. I bought both of those on Thursday. My very first LIC purchases. The journey begins!

Ok, I'm 64 pages into the 2016 LIC thread and I have a few questions. All but one can wait until I've finished the 2016, 2017 and 2018 threads.

One thing is driving me crazy though.........

Why do so many people, including professional writers and journalists, refer to "an LIC" when writing?

Why "an"? I just don't get it!!!

"An" is used before a word starting with a vowel and in some very specific cases, before a word starting with a vowel sound. "LIC" doesn't fit either category. Neither does "Listed".

Call me a grammar Nazi if you will and I admit, guilty as charged. It comes from having a mother whose entire career was devoted to language.

Is there something I'm missing? Is there a reason? Or should I just grit my teeth and ignore it?

    :)

According to the Cambridge Dictionary a/an can be used before a noun.

Because the letter "L" is pronounced with a vowel sound. El-eye-see. Though lick is common in conversation.

I'm sure this was covered. You haven't been skipping the homebrew tips as well have you?

Well yes but LIC isn't really a vowel either.

Some also suggest an can be used interchangeably with a but that's a minority view.

That's it I think. I see LIC and think "lick" but if you pronounce each letter it would commence with a vowel sound.

And, whilst it's not home brew, I have enjoyed one or two Irish whiskeys this evening so that might be what finally prompted me to post. :D

I went through a similar discussion a few years ago regarding superannuation. We worked out that it seems to depend on,when reading, the whole words or the acronym will be used.

We say "a" self managed superannuation fund, but "an" SMSF. But that doesn't always work, either (try it with SCUBA-related references).

    The English language is nuts!

“An” is short for “anal”, get used to it:).

Yep. Same for an SQL server. If you pronounce it as the acronym, use "an", otherwise it doesn't roll of the tongue as well.
