Young Rick it might be worth re-reading the attached “LIC Guide” PDF again as SPP / DRP / BSP / Rights Issues etc is detailed in there.

No comment. I'll leave that to your better half

    @Rick65, easy as.

Also be aware if an SPP is offered, again you do not have to wait for the paperwork to be sent to you. Usually a personalised application form will be available on the share registry's website. Just login, search for documentation and download it. May take a little bit of fiddling around but you'll find it.

If you use BPay (or whatever is going to be in place sometime next year), you do not have to return the application form. The form has a unique ID, so the company doesn't need it back should BPay be used.

Sorry in advance if this is a silly question..

I'm aware that dividends are paid out either twice or 4 times a year by a company.

Do we know in advance the dates of these dividends? Or do we have to wait for the dates to be announce each time? Or is there somewhere we can go to find out when a company will be paying out dividends?

Is the yearly dividend amount decided at the beginning of each year and then divided into 2 or 4 payments over the year? Or is the dividend amount decided each time they announce a dividend payment date?

    Thanks!

Yep that happened when I attended the Pfizer shareholder AGM after the release of their new product Viagra. I was there as a shareholder activist upset that the product didn’t work for everyone and I wanted my money back:mad:. I was merely trying to get maximum exposure:eek:. As they say actions speak louder than words:).

OK "team" -- Now that I have a complete [?] understanding of SPPs, can some kind person point me to an example of one in the not so distant past where I can go back and read the announcements etc and follow it through?

    Many thanks

Hi there - dates are usually similar (although not always exactly the same) as the year prior. A good guide is to find out when the company paid dividends last year and assume that this years dates will be approximately the same (barring misadventure on the company's behalf)

The dividend is decided and declared each time they announce the dividend, not at the beginning of the year.

Oh great. PMC is changing share registry from Computershare to Link Market Services. I fear more keyboarding may be required.

And another Oh great. Macquarie CMA is altering interest rates to 0% for the first $5k. I reckon they not want us smaller players. More searching around and keyboarding.

Yeah saw both those which affect us. I’ve reduced our SMSF savings in Macquarie CMT to very little nowadays given their poor interest rates. My way of telling them to get stuffed. And I hate the site upgrade, it gives me a headache. MacStuffed seems a better name for them.

Not impressed about these periodic registry changes either. I’m a bloody retiree so what the heck is going on with making me have to work. Thank Christ it’s about time for a beer on the deck. The stress of it all is getting to me.

Being AUI shareholder today I decided to browse over their old Annual reports. I know it sounds very boring but I like to compare the commentary of management from old times to see what they envisaged/promised and whether they delivered or not. Basically, trying to see if management are serious about what they say they will do.

In their 2001 annual report (link) I found this very interesting chart comparing performance of AUI accumulation (re-invested dividends) vs All Ords accumulation also re-invested dividends. As you can see from chart below AUI outperformed the All Ords by huge margin over 20 year period starting from 1980.

Based on what I can see in the charts All Ords went from 1000 to around 11,000 in 20.5 years (Dec 1980 to June 2001) compounding at 12.4% per annum. Very healthy returns. AUI on the other hand during same time period went from 1000 to 30,000 compounding at 18.04% per annum. Very impressive.

But if you look at AUI's more recent performance last 10 years it's very similar to the index. Actually most old school LIC are performing very similar to the index over last 10 or so years. Funny how it's getting more and more difficult to outperform the index nowadays compared to 30-40 years ago. Better access to information and research has led to increased competition in market which are probably the main reasons why outperforming index gets harder and harder.
