I have one of these switches and the knob to adjust the light brightness has broken off. Looks something like this HPM 250VA White Leading Edge Dimmer

Do i need an electrician to replace it or can this be done myself. I brought a spare knob from bunnings but it doesn't fit onto the existing switch, I may need to replace the entire one.

If the knob has broken off in an investment property, who is responsible in replacing it, is it the tenant or landlord?

White knob should slide straight on. If it doesnt you will ethier need to get the right one that fits the black stem it slides on.
Or replace the whole knob which will require electrician to do as need to re wire it in. Would only take ten minutes so find a friend or expect a minimum charge out rate.

    To both questions: the electrician.

The tenant would only be liable if you could prove intent to damage otherwise it is wear and tear.

Are there different variations of the knob. I only saw two kinds at bunnings, one for the fan and one for the light. The light one didn't fit. I'm not sure whether the fan one is any different except the labelling on the knob has a fan on it

You can replace the knob yourself, lever it off and take it to a wholesaler and say I need one of these. There is no removing of the wall plate.

Your example is HPM, could be Clipsal or some other make?

An electrician really won't charge much, quick job to replace. Or try Lawrence and Hanson or Haymans

Any electrician running a business properly will. Doesnt matter if it takes 1 min still have call out rates, minimum hours charged which is usually 2 hours.

He has to disconnect it first, make it safe so you can't get electrocuted etc before taking it off premises.

There will be a cam on the back of the knob so make sure it is lined up with he slot on the switch. Or post a pic of the back of the knob and the front of the switch.

Sorry I tried to attach a photo but just realised it wasn't clear. Only the knob was clear. I'll try again tomorrow

Doesn't fit both. I did align the pointy bit.

No that knob is the replacement one.

    This stuff
HPM White Replacement Dimmer Knob - 3 Pack

All my light switches with a controller look something like this. Unfortunately i don't have a close up. Its essential a black stick hanging out. One of them has a grove, but still doesn't fit the replacement ones i got a bunnings

Nah it won't be strong enough to turn the handle. Even if it was, it won't last long with another tenant.
