Looking at upgrading wife's car, options so far.

Happy for input from others. Car will be under lease through my employer.

    My pick
2019 Mazda CX-5 GT KF Series Auto i-ACTIV AWD
    - 2.5L Petrol Turbo 170kw
    - AWD
    - Decent features, all safety stuff along with apply play.
    - Can pick up for around $45k brand new 5year warranty.

    Her pick
    2018 BMW X2 sDrive20i M Sport F39 Auto
    - 2.0L Petrol Turbo 141kw
    - FWD

    - Decent features, all safety stuff along with apply play.
    - Can pick up for around $45k used ~10,000km would only have 1 years warranty.

    My alternative for her
    2019 BMW X2 xDrive20d M sport X F39 Auto AWD
    - 2.0L Diesel Turbo 140kw
    - AWD (makes sense for a SUV? no?)
    - Decent features, all safety stuff along with apply play.
    - Can pick up for around $45k used ~10,000km would only have 2 years warranty.

Check out Outlander - LS (no BSD) or Exceed (with the Lot).

While I luuuv Mazda (driving my 12yo Mazda 2) I enjoyed my recent drive of the Outlander (base model) rental and am looking to replace with an ES ADAS or LS (about 30k used)

Lot less power tho than your choices above if that matters.

Not sure about others but not really been happy with Bimmer builds of late - just make sure it's put together in Germany, not some secondary market. BIL X5 barely lasted 5 years before bits and pieces fell off it - now drives a Kluger!

Tried pushing the Mitsi originally, they're pretty decent cars now packed full of features.

2019 2.2L Diesel Turbo looks alright comes in ~$35k will similar features to the others.

Not overly concerned about the power, given it's for the wife and not me.
Do like to see the bigger engines/power given the size of the vehicle and what they're used for.
Seeing 1.5L on other brands SUVs doesn't make sense to me.

    Mitsi was a no.

id go for the X2 personally, have been looking and driving a few X BMW's recently and find the tech they put into these cars amazing, voice navigation, wireless phone charging, dynamic car settings etc - The x1 is bigger could you pick up a demo 25I for around the same? 190kw roughly with all the tech

Mate's got a BMW loves all the tech. Interesting that the X1 is bigger, go figure!

    Good option, worthwhile looking at.
    2018 BMW X1 xDrive25i F48 Auto AWD
    - 2.0L Petrol Turbo 170kw (up ~30kw on the X1)
    - AWD (compared with FWD)
    - Still similar features
    - similar price
    - Larger in size

Common senses suggests you should just buy the Mazda. Brand new. 5 year warranty

If you want the badge .... for a BMW well spec'd with good warranty, you'll probably need to spend more than 45K.

I'm biased towards the badges..... I drive an AMG and bought wifey an X3M40i...but if I had a hard budget of 45K the Mazda is a pretty compelling package. There's a reason it sells so well... its a great package

I think most people on this forum know I'm a massive fan of the CX5 (We own a 2016 GT).

Might I suggest you test drive the TTD one before settling on the Petrol. It's a little slower on takeoff but it feels great, no diesel lag due to the twin turbo.

I checked my fuel economy in it the other day and I was on 5.5l/100, I doubt the turbo petrol would bring that in.

Either way they are great cars for the money :).

Or get a Colorado and pocket the 25K change ;)

Yep definitely a lot more boot space in the X1, the X2 is quite sporty and tight to drive, X1 is more family friendly.

I’m personally looking at a Demo X3 M30i or M40i. It’s amazing how cheap they are once 5-10k has been put on them. 30% off the Val in some cases

I would go with her pick. FWD is plenty adequate for a suburban car that has the engine over the driven wheels.

Yeah been told BWM have huge drop from new ~$20k in most of them.
Then another big drop after Warranty period expires, then just smooth after that.

Garage update: after lots of research into preparing my Exige for WTAC (World Time Attack Challenge) I decided to discontinue that project and just enjoy the car at one final trackday - at Mount Panorama, no less :D

This is not a very fast lap, but I think a reasonable effort for my first time there, sending off a car I definitely didn't want to touch the walls with

Car has now been put up for sale. A bit sad to see it go, but the new owner is absolutely gonna love it, especially if laptimes are what they're after. The car will do 1:42 around Sydney Motorsport Park on 200 treadwear street tyres.

The replacement has been acquired and promptly run in at SMP :p

Her family has a shack on the Yorke Peninsula ~180km away, spend a bit of time there.

I like the idea of having the AWD option for beach etc. Overkill or worthwhile?

Hey @Ross Forrester , yes it was a M4 competition. Sold. And for a steal as well. Ended up taking $88k for it. It was immaculate and heavily optioned with $16k worth of factory extras.
But the car market is very weak at the moment. Have another car I’m moving right now through consignment at the dealership and the offers I’m getting are terrible.
