It was either lawn bowls or badminton. My heart is with badminton.

Has spending on this been sensible, unlike other big events in the past (Olympics)? Are we going to be left with many white elephants?

I'm planning on watching athletics, weightlifting, gymnastics and the various free events like the marathon.

Cost of tickets for opening and closing ceremonies is something like $700 per person, so that is not for me. I would rather watch actual competitive events.

All the various venues being built on the Gold Coast will be used either for future events, or as local facilities as the GC positions itself as the premier sports training and sports event capital of Australia. (The exception being the Games Housing Village which I believe will be converted into student accommodation as the Gold Coast ramps up its ambitions as a global education hub.

Is the Games still "a thing"? Well the media analysis are predicting that with social medial etc the Gold Coast Games will be viewed by 3 billion people globally. Hopefully, they will see various glimpses of stunning beaches and plam-tree lined Gold Coast streets during the road races, pristine beaches for triathlon events, and world class venues and organization for the other events. Also a huge amount of "sprucing up" going on in preparation, from suburbs, to malls, to hotels to restaurants to individual homes. And then there's infrastructure such as the light rail and the airport which will have long term legacy benefits.

Oh. Women's Beach Volleyball I also plan on watching... :)

You forgot the strippers prancing around surfers.. If nothing else, this will surely increase investment into the coast. Has worked successfuly in Vegas, Miami, Ibiza, etc..:)

Ha ha, yes this for sure goes hand in hand with cities that host conventions, have casinos and sporting events, clubs etc. Love it or hate it, we will see more of that on the Gold Coast (although hopefully kept to certain locations).
