    Hi all,
To my pleasant surprise I found I have won $500 at work to use for a "relevant development activity of my choice".

Maybe I can go visit @Brady in Adelaide with the money so I can see what he does in his role? ;)
But seriously.. any ideas on how should I use that money?

Study in Australia Taxation Law? A Tax Practioners Board approved course would cost around 600.

Hmmm. Doesn't sound like fun! But doing a law is great... did business law at uni and found that to be a most useful subject. (Really felt like consumer law)

Nobody study taxation for fun :), but it is a powerful skill for investors I think. Commercial Law is another interesting topic, there are so many great legal and structuring tips on this forum, it will be nice to learn them in a more systematic manner and consolidate the knowledge.

    Maybe!

Anyway, I'm leaning towards getting a Microsoft certification. Or maybe a SAS course. With SAS though, I'd need to "use it" or else I'd "lose it"

MS Certs don't come cheap as far as I know. Courses for my staff are typically $5~6k and certs need several courses plus exam fees so about $20k all up?

    I don't think it's quite that much.

That's true, and feel like almost like "40 first dates" because I don't really touch it anymore.

    Eventually I chose this:
    The Psychology of Influence Course

I'm sure anything with a strong investing theme would have been completely frowned upon by my manager...

Now justifying the relevance of being very influential in my role as a developer could be difficult... but to be a great influencer is a very useful life skill in general...

Anyway, I can say as part of my role, at times I need to push back and provide my own ideas on solution design... someone may propose something but I need to think if we should or should not do it that way and provide my own thoughts. This is where having influence is useful at work. And anybody wanting to be able to manage anything or anybody else should have solid influencing skills when working with others around them.

That sounds like a great course to do. I've read "Influence" by Cialdini, and currently reading "Pre-suasion"... what I find fascinating, is that you can be completely aware of the influence techniques being used upon you, and still be somewhat defenceless against them.
