Why do people still buy the latest and greatest iPhones and Galaxies?

I understand with iPhones that you have to pay extra...but why an iphone X when an iphone 7 works just fine?

On Android it's even more pronounced. A $200 Moto e4 is now totally fine. Speedy, good battery, lovely screen. The Galaxy is undoubtedly a step up....but is it really worth 500% more?

5 years ago, the powerful phones were the way to go as they were the only phones that offered a seamless experience..but in 2018? The tech seems to have well and truly moved on....

Because marketing is aimed at making people want what they do not need.

A good marketing strategy will create a need.

    No one ‘needs’ a $20,000 watch, a $100,000 car or a $10,000,000 house.
There are far cheaper options which effectively do exactly the same thing.

However, some people still find it frown worthy of you are seen with a ‘lesser’ Product.

    True! I should have written:
Marketing makes people need what they don't even want

No idea. I didn't even have a smart phone a few years ago. I bought one because I couldn't read the paper on my phone on the way to work anymore. I didn't get the latest and greatest. I bought a humble galaxy s4 end of line at office works for a run out price. I don't see anything wrong with it. I have used the s8 and from a usability point of view it functions exactly the same as my outdated s4. I will use this phone till it breaks or is no longer functional. The I will buy another dated phone. I like buying products at end of line because by then they have most of the bugs sorted out.

I studied marketing at uni as part of my commerce degree. Knowing how it works helps me ignore it!

Speed. We all want everything NOW!
Apple have admitted they artificially slow phones down as part of iOS updates (after they got caught - still they tried to spin it as something else)

While I was at a large telco we'd make an absolute killing with iPhone recontracting every 2 years because of how simple it was to renew your plan and get a sweet new phone... Sure its $150/mth but the average consumer doesnt see as far.

You should use it to exploit marketing. Things like adding flights to your cart then close your browser and wait 2 days- you'll get a nice discount offer from us marketing chumps :)

I have tried that. It didn't work for me but the price was good, so I booked anyway :)

In the past, I went on a new phone contract because it ended up being cheaper than my old plan with more calls, data and received a new phone.

But really, if it wasn't for those benefits, prefer to use my old phone and keep going with that. It's painful to see people with a smashed phone and waiting for 6 months or so before they can 'upgrade' to a new phone.

Most of us *could* live in apartments (if we needed to). Many choose to live in a house with a backyard instead (because we want to, and we can).

    Wants over needs.

Only reason I upgrade is I find the battery starts to die on them after a few years. I never buy them early on because they usually have a few bugs that need ironing out.

I get what you're saying though. I don't understand these man children who camp outside the apple store because they need to get the phone the same day it comes out. Maybe when they lose their virginity they'll stop caring about it?

The fabulous Nokia 635 running Windows 8 (Unable to be upgraded to Windows 10 due to processor and memory constraints)

Well that was a crappy photo of my 635! I actually used a Nokia E5 to do it.

Here's the photo retaken with the N95 (in the original photos) of my 635 and E5

I still use the N95 as a camera (has a Carl Zeiss lens believe it or not) and take it into situations where I don't want to risk more expensive gear - like sliding on sand dunes! (Do I really *need* a gopro? :D)

N95!! I lusted after one when I was using an N82 (stick phone with rice grain sized buttons.) Every phone since then has been only upgraded as they begin to fail (too slow even after reformat, bad battery life, camera not shooting well anymore etc)

    Hmmm
Telco's market them in such a way that the consumer only looks at the monthly repayment, and thats cheap compared to the buy it outright price.

I buy all mine outright o_O
It sucks being on contract when I break them so often
(No, not like how Russell Crowe breaks phones )

    Yeah so did I.

It’s great being able to understand what they are trying to get you to do.
I always remember debating with my lecturer that (in my view) it was impossible to ‘create a need’.
He proved me very very wrong.
