Had planned to take the family (we have two boys 16 & 12) on a work trip in January to Vietnam but now not sure it will turn out that well (too much work involved).

So ... was thinking there may be better value in doing something before Christmas. The boys finishing school this Friday - so we have two weeks before everyone is on holidays.

Just wondering if anyone has some good sites or suggestions about finding a good last minute holiday option. The east coast of Australia has well and truly been done before. Hobart & Auckland have sort of been done as well.

A good airfare and/or a good hotel (at the last minute !) is what I am after.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Great trip. We did this a couple of years ago. Helicopter ride over the Apostles and we went up through the Coonawarra on our way to Adelaide.

Link above for relocation hire of campervans.it's pretty much free hire but they limit the time you have or set time restrictions. eg bris to Syd, $5/day, arrive in Sydney before 3/12/15. Just need to pay fuel... But with two boys you might want the convertible campervan!

Can you adopt me??? :) I took the fam too Hahndorf, we shared a schnitzel :D

Is there a website around for last minute flights? How do you find the good deals?? My wife just got return flights free from Perth to Syd but it's next march. Sounds like you need some flight deals to get you to the other side of the country?

If you want good flight deals, sign up to the airlines' newsletters, the Virgin "happy hour" is every Thursday from 4:00pm Or... Bank of Qld customers get 20% off all Virgin flights until July 2015. Flights from Perth to eastcoast are expensive, so it might be worth opening a small savings account with BoQ

We did 3 weeks at a nice old holiday house in Victor Harbor last year (S.A).

Good location, a bit run down, but relatively cheap, and Victor Harbor is quite nice.

There used to be really cheap flights from Cairns to Japan. Kill 2 birds with one stone going north

I normally just go to http://www.skyscanner.com.au/ and leave the destination as "anywhere" and do a search for flights departing/returning in January. You'll be able to see which destinations are cheap/easy to get to. From there - you can book hotels, etc - airbnb is awesome in most places (not sure about SE Asia)

    Cheers

The trip on the time machine would cost more than the flight though :-(

    Two weeks?

Can often get cheap international flights:
Japan - get in Tokyo, Kyoto (stunning) and Hiroshima
Hawaii - Waikiki would be great for the kids, if you can get to Maui and drive up Haleakala to watch the sunset - the second coolest thing ever (hiking the Great Wall of China was better)
Fiji - ? too boring for the kids

North QLD would be my pick too, just got some decent flights to Townsville on short notice. Going to Magnetic Island and/or driving to Cairns for a few nights. Plenty of things to do around there.
