Landlord agent charging backdated 5 years of outgoings difference to tenant

Landlord agent sent invoice 1 year later after the lease ends which backdated 5 years of outgoings difference to tenant. It sounds not very common to have an issue like this while it happened to my old company. And the bill itself contains several obvious errors, the owners of the company suspected it could be a scam involved and asked for any valuable advice before referring this maters to solicitor.

 

If you signed a lease agreeing to pay outgoings, the fact that there outgoings were forgotten to be charged wouldn't ordinarily absolve you from paying them. If you think it's a scam/mistake, that's different story.

 

Thanks for the feedback, the outgoings were paid each month it’s just the reconciliations to actual amounts for the past 5 years the landlord asked to pay after the leases ended. It took them more than 5 years to do the reconciliation figures which is shocking and the company left the premise long ago.

 

Some LL's & agents may just be slack, the lease administrator didn't think it important (as the tenant was already paying outgoings), may not have known how to do a reconciliation until they got a new bod on board who reviewed the situation etc.

As @Omnidragon points out, it's a contractual obligation and the amount of adjustment should only be minor.
