I have a bare block of land
I assume a bare block is one that can have plantings on it but no house or shed.

Regarding land tax, would this have been paid by vendor when I bought it?
Also do I have to contact the relevant department to initiate land tax or do they automatically send me a bill?
What date must it be paid by?

Insufficient information. What state ? When did you buy ?

The land owners at the relevant taxing date in their state will become liable to land tax whether they are registered or not. OSR then send notices in due course IF the owner has land that exceeds the relevant taxing threshold. If unregistsred they can assess arrears years later or on sale or other dealings. Contact your state Office of State Revenue. Each state maintains a well informed website. Google "XXX" state land tax.
