Following up from a Twitter post by member @Jacque - I had often thought that Mr Hooker inherited a bit of an unfortunate name. But it seems that he chose it himself- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leslie_Joseph_Hooker Though I'm not sure that L J Tingyou would have had the same ring about it.
Chinese surnames are usually one syllable, but you are forgetting about the rest of asia - have you see how long a Thai surname is? incidentally about 20% of Thais have Chinese ancestry and their surnames are often 3 Chinese names all joined together - e.g Manyuanyong family - must have been a chinese guy named Man Yuan Yong in the distant past
His parents were Chinese Australian, whatever that means. I had a colleague whose grandfather was the first AFL (VFL as it was then) player of Chinese origin- Wally Koochew. My friend has the same surname, and doesn't look at all Chinese.
Too similar to L J sTing you. Hooker is only slightly more positive - something most take notice of I would think.
I wonder why he chose hooker out of all names. I'm guessing it didn't have the same meaning it did back then as it does now
I worked in the office where he started his empire (ok, ok. I know Im not that old) and we 'knew this information' that he spent part of his life in a childrens' home, and was half Chinese. In his childhood days it was the White Australia policy and mixed race kids didn't have much of a chance from the 'White Australia' side of things. I grew to admire him.
