I'm not a big fan of any of those, but with white cabinets and stainless appliances, and assuming the floor is staying that grey tone, I'd go for 6 myself to tone down the white. I like 2 but you might feel like you are in the middle of a snow ski field with all that white.

I think perhaps 2 or 6. I had a black bench top at another house and it looked nice but you could see every single water drop so you needed to dry the bench after wiping it - I wouldn’t go black again. Perhaps grey glass subway tiles if you’re going a white bench top or white if you’re going a grey bench top.

Something like this with bench top 2 would look nice.

I agree a grey subway backsplash will work well with a white kitchen and will show the dirt less. White tiles and white grout are a pain to keep clean in cooking areas

I would go 1. 3 or 4 for the bench top and grey splashback

    How about 600x600 grey tiles?

If your overhead cupboards at 700mm higher (common if over a stove) then 600 x 600 tiles might not be the best choice as they will end up with cut tiles

Thanks. As it is over an electrical cooktop, I can go with 600mm in height between the benchtop and overhead cabinets. As the kitchen is small, big tiles potentially will make the kitchen look bigger. I am thinking the subway tiles may have too many grout lines which could make cleaning more difficult.

To be really blunt - that would look cheap… after all the effort and expense of a new kitchen it’s worth the extra $150 to get better tiles. I’ve never had an issue with grout in kitchens being hard to clean (bathrooms are a different story!).

Ok. Thanks. Will try subway tiles this time. I had better go with what most people like since I need to make sure my future tenants like it. I am considering smoke grey and steel grey subway tiles from nationaltiles. The ones shown on your photo look very nice, where do you get them from?

They are both nice :). It’s a bit hard to tell how dark they are from the photos, the second one might be a little too dark? It would be best if you can check them out in person.

The pic I posted was just a random one off the net - not my house.

Unfortunately National Tiles are not national and not in WA.

I think that will look cheap. Go with subway, or glass tiles. Or even just coloured glass

Would you recommend a good tile store?

Is colored glass much more expensive than tiles?

I don't know. I always tile, and I usually use expensive tiles for the splashbacks. It's not a large area, so putting an expensive, attractive tile there doesn't set you back much.

@Westminster @wylie I am painting the house at the same time while doing the kitchen reno. The painting work has been completed except for the kitchen and bathroom. Can the painting of the kitchen be done before the tiler does the splashback tiling or should that be done when the tiler finishes his work?

Also, does the electrician need to readjust the powerpoints after the tiling is completed?

    Thanks

Has the old kitchen been removed? I think it would be safe to paint before the tiler

Thanks you. Yes, the old kitchen has been removed. The cabinets have been installed. The benchtop will be put on early next week. Why it is better to paint before tiling?
