@KateAshmor, Propertychat member, is the liberal candidate running for Macnamara (inner south/south east/south west of melb), and is my local candidate.

Quote from the liberal website bio:

'Small business operator, lawyer, community volunteer, public policy commentator, mother. Kate Ashmor wears many hats!

Kate is a trusted local and a widely respected community advocate. She is passionate about small business, stronger families, a fair go and the vibrancy of our unique electorate.

Kate and her husband Tom live in Caulfield. They have been married for seventeen years and they have two young daughters, Tammy and Mikayla.

Kate has lived locally her entire life. She went to Kindergarden in Elsternwick, grew up in her grandparents’ flat in Elwood, was one of the first girls to attend Caulfield Grammar thanks to an academic scholarship, and she studied Arts/Law at Monash University.

From humble beginnings, Kate has been working since her early teens. Her first job was at a party decorating shop in Caulfield South. She started her first business aged seventeen, tutoring local students. And she has practised as a lawyer for thirteen years, including in her own Caulfield-based law firm for the last four years. Kate has helped many locals with their conveyancing and wills.

Kate’s face is a familiar one in Macnamara: she served as an elected Councillor for the City of Glen Eira from 2005-2008, and she has Chaired the board of Caulfield Park Bendigo Bank since 2013. She is a former President of Australian Women Lawyers and has served on various not-for-profit boards over the years.

As our community enters a new era, there is nobody more passionate about Macnamara’s past, present and future than Kate.

Kate Ashmor is your local Liberal candidate for Macnamara.'

I wish you all the best Kate, and i will be voting for you.

Going to be interesting contest in that electorate. Could go one of three ways ... Pref flows will most likely be the decider. Notionally Labor apparently.

Lovely, caulfield is a great area. We are in caulfield east, also a great family spot, where all the neighbours say hi on the street.

It's not the first time a member of this forum running for office has been in trouble for something they posted in the past.

this. Would be interesting to do analysis of such behaviour according to political beliefs for candidates. 'conservatives' / rightwingers seem to get pulled up on this more often than others e.g Dutton, Kate Ashmor, Alan Jones, etc

I have no doubt that a good many politicians or aspiring politicians have regretted comments they made on social media in the past. I'm not entirely sure it's newsworthy to be honest?

In many cases it's certainly no worse than the name calling that goes on under the guise of parliamentary privilege

A sign of the times. It has become an issue in the modern world because of social media & the internet. Years ago, the exact same things would happen. Politicians/candidates would say all sorts of things but because there were far less methods for it to be recorded, they would go relatively unnoticed.

Today, much of our daily lives revolve around the use of the internet/social media to express ourselves and sometimes unfortunately, we say things we may regret later on. To make it worse, these moments of self-expression can stay online for years and can be dug up at will.

First rule of social media: Never put anything on there that you don't want the whole world seeing (including the person you're writing it about), even if your page it private.

Digging up dirt on people's past, even emoticons, says a lot about the person trying to find dirt on others.

This goes for all sides of politics.

    Standard practice I'm afraid.

It's not so much about the policies and promises as it is about character assassination :(

Kates had a pretty rough couple of days. Below is a link of an interview she did a couple of years ago. I thought it was a pretty good read. Based on that i would have said she was a more centrist politician, even having some more left leaning views.

And hopefully an incentive for politicians to actually model ethical behaviour. And now back to the real world ..

    From the She Speaks article:

‘I’ve always felt – and it’s difficult for non–Jewish people to understand this – that there is a motivation that comes from deep within,’

What a strange thing to say Kate.

Regarding the SMH article, if private schools are vastly superior to state schools wouldn't that be a great argument for re-apportioning funding to favour state schools to get them up to scratch - because that benefits most Australians, not just the elite who can afford private schools?

Also, I think Kate would have been just as successful in a state school due to her deep motivational drive. Although maybe I don't understand that.

Good luck to Kate. I've enjoyed reading her posts when it comes to property, and would happily vote for her if I lived in her electorate.

She comes from a Jewish background. She describes herself as economically conservative but socially progressive, and a feminist. She may have more in common with Labor than most Coalition candidates.

While she is being pilloried in the press, I think the Coalition need more candidates like her.
