For that price you would by--pass the agent ..

A very simple way is after you have the entry visa--just sign-up with the airlines you may intend to use on their rewards set-ups ..
Then just let them emails the prices ,most change everyday if you book 3-5 advance ..imho..

Waiting for the post a few weeks later when the op complains she booked a flight to sydney canada and couldnt find her way back.

There are some tricks to this. Connecting flights (do you need to get luggage or straigjt through checkin?) cities with more than one airport, transfers etc.

Agree - we have not been provided any info on exactly where @justine77 is going! It could be a multi-hop Intl + domestic connectors!

Exactly. While booking yourself will be cheaper, if the trip is complicated you need to know what you are doing.

On another point, some cheap looking flights online may not include luggage. Worse, certain legs may not have luggage!

The advertised "cheap" flights are sometimes click bait or have so many conditions that they aren't worth the hassle. I know someone who insisted buying a cheap flight to UK and she ended up taking about 48 hours to get there via some non-air conditioned tin shed jungle airport terminal in Indonesia or Borneo, and then Korea, and then Moscow.

    yes my daughter did similar.
she booked the cheapest ticket to go a a friends special occassiont and it ended up going through china where all flights were cancelled for storms and where nowhere accepted her credit cards. then she was taken through russia to where she actually wanted to go . she managed and there were no young kids with her that time abd she arrived very close to the occassion she'd travelled across the world to be at.
abut this time will be different there will be kids travelling with us.

    simply to newark usa airport.
not planning to do sight seeing just rest and enjoy the festivities around my sons wedding.
and return probably within 2 weeks probably

It wouldn't be my first choice - I'd probably change flights to go via AKL or Hawaii or Middle East

Has Justine's family got a plan for how they are going to deal with several young children on long haul flights? Meals, toileting, sleep patterns. Changes of clothes handy, keeping them entertained and quiet?

If you let your network know you are going overseas ,you will be able to keep your number and they will charge you $5 per day when you use your phone.if you're using your phone everyday while you're overseas then a sim card is probably your best bet.

You don't need a plan - most airports have free internet wifi. If you are not sure how to do it, go to an info counter and they will show you.

HKG has great wifi in the airport.

I also have Kogan and cannot get roaming for Europe.

    Australia Post TravelSIM

There are a few different plans to choose from. You can call and speak with a Gold Coast representative. They've been extremely helpful to me.

I got caught last trip and sent a very long text to try to resolve an issue at home. That cost me a lot because there is some small print that a text is 140 characters.

Just be careful and read (or ask the consultant) the fine print, but this is probably the cheapest way to have ability to stay in touch.

I've been caught out thinking that I'd only need data at an airport and where we were staying. That meant I couldn't catch Uber when I was our and about.

Here's a good article covering a few of the options
