Its a great idea. Obviously wouldnt be needed all the time but if the infrastructure was in place then happy days, no more drought!
The cost though? how much would be key.
Macca (Ian McNamara ABC radio sunday mornings) has been going on about water trains trucking it down for ages.

All the "wasted" runoff from flooding seems like it could be re-used if possible. Depends on where they would "catch" it? Ensuring environmental flows would remain in the waterways they take it from would be paramount too?
Its a tough one but it could be worked through I guess. never say never!

I cannot understand why it didn't occur 50 years ago ... was originally planned for nearly 100 years back

Problem is they have been talking about this water transfer from when Sir-Joh was in power and most that had a professional opinion at the time wanted it complete in the mid 1990's never happened ..
If it was set-up the way they wanted back then pump from one to other with hydro back into the grid then Queensland would have been maybe able to manage the drought and floods a lot better that it has been managed ..imho..

Not disputing that there's been endless political indecision about it.... it goes right back to the Bradfield Scheme... just wondering whether people support the idea and ehether they'd be willing to pay for it.

Take it on step further. If each of our approximately 25 million citizens were asked to pay $4,000 towards this infrastructure, for a total of $100 Billion.... would you consider $4,00 per citizen a reasonable investment to provide what would effectively be a drought proof economy ?

Thats a lot for "every citizen" to come up with. Plenty of folks out there wouldnt even have that much saved.
Make the bloody Govt pay for it I say!:p

Think Snowy Mountains Scheme ... on a far larger scale.

Which could also boost employment as the SMS did, and possibly migration as well. Culturally the SMS probably contributed a great deal to our multiculturalism.

Yeah I dont think a straight out levy on every single citizen is appropriate.
A levy on taxable income over a few years would work maybe?
is there actual figures on this yet?

One you break down the 25 million into numbers who could or would have a spare 4k in their pocket going by what the media prints every day it would end in a expletive --ridden --tirade..Unless it was possible to have a refund for the 4k plus interest on a ten year government bond once the system is running and paying for itself..

The problem is that "the people" don't really get a say in the decisions made by the government of the day.

I can't help but think about the fact that with something like 70% of people being in favour of gay marriage, it still could have been knocked on the head had the actual politicians voted against it.

So what the people want, and what the politicians who have one eye on the next election want don't always match up.

    exactly.
I've been banging on about this exact idea for years.
Would love to see any Politician show some backbone and fight for it to happen.

Ok I'll rephrase... the equivalent of 4K per citizen. $100 Bn ..... would that be a worthwhile investment of taxpayer funds to drought proof the country and provide sufficient water to develop food industries inland ? To grow populations inland? etc etc

Govt bond is a good idea as well.... why couldnt we invest in a 10 or 20 year Govt bond to fund it?

Absolutely. What is the NBN costing? I'd much rather have security of water supply.
