So excited, my youngest daughter has started Italian classes. I now text her in Italian, so fun....love it

Many say why did I not speak and teach this at a young age, I wish I did.

    Anyway..... Ciao guys

Don't do what I did, when my nephew was learning Italian at school, his homework was to bring a word in Italian and its meaning. In typical SNM style, I suggested the word for 'strong' being 'stronzo' - well, it sounded feasible ;)

Did exactly the same thing with lil' Ms No Mates - her teacher was not amused.

Most people here speak a dialect which can be very different to Italian

    amazing!

i started doing a great course on Audible called 'Learn Italian with Paul Noble'.

it's brilliant, listening to 20 mins per day while clearing up the dinner plates. loads of similar words, which help to give you a head start

could be a while before i can actually try it out in person, but they are talking about letting Brits travel from May..."grazie mille a tutti"!

    Good on her!

Our daughters weren't taught their mother's first language, Spanish, when they were young - unfortunately. We didn't realise then the benefits of a second language early.

They made up for it later by spending time in Mexico. Our younger daughter went to school there for seven months when she was 14. She learnt that not all the words she learnt from her friends could be repeated in front of her grandmother. When she was 19, she spent a year backpacking solo around Latin America.

Our older daughter wasn't as interested early, but she went over to work in Mexico for six months - including three months on a beachside restaurant and bar.

Try the app Duolingo. It’s great fun, free and really helps you to learn the basics of a language. I’m doing French and my wife is doing Italian.

I only speak to my 3-year-old in German, even if other people are around. He understands virtually everything, but 95% of what he says is in English.

My wife is starting to understand more and more as well.

    +1 for Duolingo.

I spent about 6 months learning Italian on the app before moving there for 9 months. Could understand a lot but was obviously more difficult to speak it :)

Io parlo poco Italiano, ma capisco di piu!

The italian language form comes from Tuscany yes, but if you got to Florence you will have a hard time understanding the local version.
Mostly the do no pronounce the "C"s and replace them with "H"s.

Then there's different accents based on regions even though the words may be the same.
Jiust like a, Irish and Scottish in theory all speak english but in practice their accents make it sound like gibberish to me.

I should change my avatar from one of my Aussie cars to my only Italian car ATM. It’s a bit like me Italian body with an Aussie heart. 03B9C9BE-C76A-4C84-8A4B-62A8B5AB7138.jpeg

    Thanks, I definitely will!

I made my now wife promise me, as a condition of getting married, that we'd move to Germany for a year once we have children that are old enough to learn the language properly. She really didn't mind at the time, but now that this is drawing closer to being a reality, she's getting a little bit worried about it.

By the way, if anyone wants to learn French, it's actually much simpler than some people think!

    That's the beginner class done.
    Here is the intermediate syllabus.
