    Hey guys,

Below is a photo of the corner of my garage wall and the ensuite wall. As you can see, the vertical mortar line (in the corner where the two walls meet) is not straight and appears zig-zag. I think this is because the bricks on one or both walls were not cut to the correct size.

When I asked the builder about this, they say "the bricks need to be tied in together and this is the finish". I'm not sure if they mean anything special/technical by "tied in together", but is this normal? There's also a close up photo below.

    Thanks!

Completely normal mate....choose a white mortar against a dark brick and you're just more likely to notice ;)

Not an answer to your query, but I think you’ve got those dark colored bricks that chip easily, showing the brown clay. Do a lot of them have chips?

Hmmm, the bricks are Austral Blackbutt. I hadn't noticed the chip until you mentioned it. Overall I'm fairly happy with the colour of the bricks now that they have been laid and cleaned. I will check out the chipped ones next time I'm onsite.

Assuming there are not many chipped ones now, they are not going to easily get chipped once construction is over.. are they?

No, not once the bricks have been cleaned. A bad brick cleaner using a pressure washer can really damage these sorts of bricks. There’s a level of chipping that is unacceptable.

If the brick cleaner has been and gone, then chipping should be minimal after that.

Thanks Mike. It's encouraging to hear it's normal. I did check out a couple of construction next door and they weren't this bad though... although they weren't black bricks..

The only ways to achieve a straight joint is to cut all of the bricks short or at 45 degrees.

I didn't think about it.. Now that you mentioned it (and I've done some googling to see what is 'soldier course' :p), I think I prefer it without anyway.. :)

Hmm interesting.. so looks like they have done the right thing. If it was straight as I had expected then that would be wrong. Good to know :) Thanks!
