Pretty sure a significant portion of the populous of the two regions is NOT celebrating - neither is the rest of Ukraine

You been watching Fox again? The fact that they broadcast Fox in Russia should be a heads up warning as to the quality and accuracy of the outlet

What the world leaders should be doing is getting on with counter measures like sanctions etc BEHIND THE CURTAIN, whilst continually trying to have dialogue with the Russians, again behind closed doors.

News conferences and public declarations are just fanning the flames of war and goading Russia! Complete imbeciles.

And would the people who objected to an incoming army really be out there protesting?

In WWII, there were hundreds of thousands of German speaking people occupying countries outside Germany, who would have celebrated the Germans arriving. That didn't mean that the Germans were doing the right thing.
Lithuanians welcoming German soldiers. Jubilant Lithuanian crowd welcoming German soldiers...

This picture is in the Ukraine

A concern is that China must be watching how nations address Russia as this will influence their position on taiwan.

It's going to be extremely difficult to sanction China unless we wean off them first.

USA and other EU kinda forget Russia isn't your backward country like some Arab's country or African's country.
This is an actual "Nuclear Super Power" country. Have the 2nd most nuclear and military assortment. Only USA can claim the 1st most destructive power.

Don't corner the sleepy bear... You won't like what happen next. You will be reminded soon enough.

Is Russia just interested in the areas where a lot of Russian people live, or do they have designs on the whole country?

There has been a lot of talk that there are Russian areas which they claim have been badly treated by Ukraine, but it will be interesting to see if they restrict themselves just to those areas, or to the whole country.

It's not even a super power other than via nuclear weapons.

Germany alone has a GDP 3x that of Russia ... the USA has more military power and spending than the next three combined (Russia, China and India) with nearly 3x the spending of China (who does have the biggest bodies on the ground army) and 15x that of Russia

If you break it down further, the biggest military in the world is the US army - 2nd biggest is the US Navy

29 Largest Armies In The World

Is Army Richest Service? Navy? Air Force? AEI's Eaglen Peels Back Budget Onion - Breaking Defense

What will be interesting is whether - with the physical support and backing of the rest of the EU - will Germany cut off it's gas supply from Russia. Given it's storage is 30%+ full and we're coming out of winter (albeit, still harsh conditions) - which would supply 8% of annual requirements (just over 1 month), with supplies still coming from Norway and Eastern Europe. Europe relies on Russia for 40% of it's gas supplies - but Russia is more reliant on selling than Europe is of buying, with fossils making up 50% of Russian exports - and Europe having a range of suppliers

Most of the gas supplied to Europe is used to produce electricity so, with support from other European countries, it could reduce it's reliance and tap into nuclear, ramping up coal powered, renewable etc

Factbox: How much does Germany need Russian gas?

Did anyone mention - it's complicated

If they drop the “bomb” then nobody wins.

Putin has expressed that he wants to bring back together the "traditional" lands of the USSR ... he called them "ancient Russian lands".

If that's the case - I'll let Putin know that Mongolia called and they want their land back - oh - and the Romans are keen to reignite their claim of Egypt - but guess we can hand Alaska back without upsetting to many

It was a very unsettling speech and does make one wonder if their is truth to the strong rumours that he is suffering Parkinson's Disease - which can cause delusions - and word is coming out that he also has terminal cancer (notice how puffy he's been lately, compared to his half naked horseback riding a few years ago - and would also explain the long separation table at negotiations as he may be immuno-suppressed from treatment) - which might explain the irrational haste with which he is moving is comparison to Crimea

Putin's war: his rage-filled justification for invading Ukraine

    Hallucinations and delusions.

Yes USA does spend more. But you are talking about Russia backyard and sphere of influence.
The balance of power isn't as simple more spending. Having the right tool for the job is what counts.
It is call HOME soil advantage.

I agree - and it will get very bogged down if drags on and ends up guerrilla and resistance tactics ... but my answer was in regards to this
