I hate networking with a passion - I find talking to people I don't know quite challenging (in a networking scenario). I'm a relatively quiet introverted person (until I know you better).

Thankfully my job doesn't require it. It does require public speaking to large audiences and I'm perfectly ok with that.

I read somewhere in the Airbnb info that if you link it to your facebook then Airbnb looks for any mutual friends between you and that guest. If there is a match then you will rank higher in the results list than any other host. For the reasons of, you probably like the same or similar things and you will probably be a suitable host for that guest.

I don't think its an urban myth... there are definite benefits...

You certainly don't give that impression by your posts, perhaps it's more who you trust? or are you taking the ****, I never know these days:)

I struggle with this because I'm not in the RE industry or an industry that's reliant on networking.

I have latched onto a couple of family connections who have done well investing in real estate however they made their fortunes 20+ years ago so a lot of the advice they give is hard to follow in my financial circumstance e.g. pay off the first property in full before buying again, buy acreage in sydney metro.

PC is my primary networking place

Lots of people think it's about getting a discount or referral fee and it's not. At all. Its more about finding people and / or connecting people together.

I'm perfectly happy to pay full price to a reliable and good quality operator (from any industry) and they get the same back in return.

Why go it alone. Like leveraging your finances in property. Why not leverage from other peoples network and let them leverage from yours.

Me too @MTR , I always treat them with respect and remain friendly with them. I want to be on top of their mind always.

I think networking is helpful and can be resourceful. It's a bit like going to a bar and speaking to every lady. Bound to get people who reciprocate.

In other words, networking for the sake of networking probably creates some negative hormones in my body so I'd rather be selective.

Looking back in the last 12 months, the only people I have actively networked with is people from this forum. Apart from that, I love my "me" time, to think and ponder by myself.

Good thread. Surprised not more people commented. With my work its essential especially to bounce ideas off each other and looking at a given situation with a different set of eyes.

Am currently networking in US, can always work against you if you don't network with the right people

So the question is how do you know whether you are networking with the right people?

I'm hearing ya. I don't dislike people, but I dont know how to chit chat either, which seems to be quite important when it comes to networking. Social situations with people I don't know (and sometimes people I do know) are a bit scary for me.

    +1 here.

I prefer to listen these days. I get enough preaching across thru REIWA and if you're not an active talker most people tend to gloss over you in a social situation.

That, and my inability to tolerate and further small talk make things pretty difficult!

I once read in a sales/neg book that you have two ears and one mouth and that is the ratio in which you should approach conversations. Listening is a very powerful tool, that very few people know how to do properly.
