Is it worth it to have an additional building surveyor apart from contract?

    Hello all,

We are thinking of buying land and constructing. The construction company we are planning to go with is thinking of hiring company X to do the surveying/inspection.

Should I hire another surveyor apart from the contract? Or is that unnecessary?

I know that the construction company's contract has a clause that it will cost me $ 1000 in admin fees and the new building surveyor has to be registered etc. which is fine by me.

Will banks also hire additional 3rd party surveyor to monitor the construction before giving cash to the builder in stages?

    Thanks for any advice!

The builder may recommend someone that they are confident will approve the work done because of previous transactions but that doesn't mean that they are doing you any favours.

You are probably better off getting someone the builder has not used so will be more critical of the work.

You are engaging the inspector so you call the shots.
