went out with a friend the other night to a nice Korean restaurant.
As we was coming out i paid for it using my Commbank Debit card which has a mastercard logo on it.

i was quite devastated when the cashier said there is a 3 per cent surcharge

i have never had this before and thought it was stopped?
my question is ,was he making this surcharge up?

this was NOT a CC only a Debit card .

lucky we took the sugars, salts.straws with us

Leglislation only limited surcharges, it did not abolish them.

3% for a debit card seems too high. By law, surcharges are limited to the actual cost incurred by accepting the card.

The tactic is to entice/force you to pay cash, which is what their goal is. Cash is king!
Not much "flexibility" once the electronic trail is set.

I would not be happy paying 3% surcharge for using any card, let alone using a debit card with my own money... but seriously, did you take sugars, salts and straws? Why?
