From what I've read trump will play this trade war until election time, striking a deal and confidence just prior. Otherwise he won't win the election.

There are both pros and cons, it is never one way traffic.

Along with delivering a record surplus, international trade is tipped to help boost Australian economic growth for the June quarter. The Reserve Bank Board is meeting today but is not expected to move the target cash rate from 1 per cent. A cut of 25 basis points is expected later in the year.

Economists say Australia may get a much needed economic boost from the trade surplus revealed this morning.

"We estimate that net trade boosted GDP growth in Q2, providing a glimmer of hope amidst the bleak domestic outlook," said Ben Udy, Australia and New Zealand economist at Capital Economics.

"Given the recent weakness in the domestic economy, net trade was probably the main driver of GDP growth in the second quarter. And with the exchange rate depreciating further in Q3, we expect net trade to continue to support GDP growth over 2019."

The Australian wine industry has emerged as an unlikely beneficiary of the ongoing US-China trade war, overtaking France in the enormous Chinese market.

Agree - was more thinking along the lines of the dropping dollar as being a symptom of instability and unsettlement.

I know, talking to local business owners, that business is down around 20% across the board - regardless of the product - due to uncertain consumer sentiment in this current climate of tit for tat

You got me. 22.6% - wow! I had to go check what had happened overnight.

Then I saw the date of October. I can't see the year, but I can breathe properly now.

Sorry Geoff ,i always like to look at that page ,the simple way for me is just look at only the large percentage changes and that makes the size of the medias headlines..
1--3 percent does not carry much power-- once it goes into a 24 hour period above 7 percent like in Oct 1997 then it may be a short term problem...

Another major side effect to all this is the China is being forced to devalue their currency which will mean less Chinese tourists and less Students. Both very important to the AUS economy. And would also have a negative effect on Chinese importers specifically Iron ore which will also have a negative effect on Aus ...
