Kids are complaining that their IPAD thingy is old. Sure, it's not the current model (bought 4 years ago so not super powerful - so they tell me).

Has wifi, doesn't have a SIM, 32 MB (I think)

I asked all the right questions:
    • how many pages does your IPAD have left?
    • Can you rip out the used pages?
    • Is it spiral bound? So can I buy some new pages to add to your IPAD?
    • What colour is it?
How old should your tech be before you replace it?
They can't run the latest apps on their IPAD eg. BB8/R2D2 programming tool

So, if anyone knows about IPADs some guidance would be appreciated (I'm not an 'I'-centric product person (android/MS all the way).

ipad's technology life is about 3 years if you want to be able to keep up to date with the OS.
I need to get a new ipad for our middle child as they use it for school and his now can't be updated to the OS that is the school recommended OS to use their apps.
However it's a perfectly good ipad still for watching movies etc so you might as well keep it if you get a new one as well.

    32Gb is still fine though

Edit: this is the advice from our school which may or may not be helpful "
The iPad preferred is an iPad Air 2 model with 32GB of RAM and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Earlier generation models, which may already be owned by some families, are an acceptable alternative, such as iPad Air as long as it is a model capable of running the latest version of iOS. Currently this is iOS 11. An iPad Gen 1, 2, 3 and 4 or iPad Mini are deemed unsuitable as they are unable to run this version of the operating system.

Is it still holding charge ok?

We use ipad minis for our home opens and for routine inspections, I'd much prefer to be using android but the app doesn't come in that flavour yet.

We have a couple of them and they were previous model when I bought them, I don't think they really age or degrade. At least if they're looked after properly?

I find that they slow down every time a new iOS is released (regardless whether I upgrade or not).

Not changing it's usage - still using chrome to browse, but the lag gets worse.

It's like apple has some code in the iOS to slow down the idevices year or year.

I don't have any experience with iPads, but I do know that certain types of flash memory used in tablet devices can really slow down after a few years of use - to the point where the device becomes basically unusable.

There may be some maintenance routine that you can run to refresh the device (sometimes a "reset to factory settings" might do the trick), but with our old Android tablet - it was basically terminal.

I'd hope that Apple use better quality flash memory in their devices.

Number one issue either way is often how full is the storage on the device? If it is nearly full, that can cause some slowdown in performance - make sure you clean up old temporary files and remove any unused apps and data.

Same for me Nek. I use a mini which I love, and it is almost attached to my hand because I use it so much. I think it is 3-4 years old, and is starting to lag. Apple don't seem to have a new mini on the horizon yet.

I had an IPad2 (I think) - purchased around 5 years ago and finally died the other day. It copped a beating - it had been dropped, stood on, water spilt on it, etc - I can't believe it kept going for so long.

Would a surface pro be suitable for the kids? They're more expensive but a lot better than an iPad.

    No issues there

Don't know if they've upgraded the IOS

I've asked them to so a reset but met with a unanimous "but we'll loose our games etc". My memory ain't that flash either ;)

They've got netbooks & chromebooks for school so not after a full blown confuser.

My parents have been using iPad's since they came out, and the siblings use the Samsung equivalents.

Over the years, the Apple products deteriorate to a point of hardly being able to use them. Especially around software update time (even if you don't update), it's like they're programmed to fail.

I still have all my Samsung products working fine. The only time I 'need' to replace them is when my daughter drops them from upstairs, or wants to see if they float. Good thing I can get them cheap!

The only reason my parents still use Apple products is because they are designed for 'tech dummies'.. anyone can pick it up and use it. (I give Apple credit for that - they have done well with their usability for people with limited tech knowledge).

If you can spend a little bit of time getting used to the Android operating system, you'll save yourself a lot of money switching to non-Apple products.

I had the original ipad. Im not sure how old it is. I just found the older it got, the slower it loaded until it became to frustrating to use. I only updated to a Samsung 4 months ago. So far, so good.

No, that would be an iPatch, not an iPad.

I find that my android phablet slows if certain apps are installed e.g. social media and some media apps. I imagine the same is true for an ipad. I must admit I lack sympathy for children complaining of a slow ipad unless it is critical to school work/ apprenticeship. If you consider how slow computers were even a few years ago, I would not be leaping to upgrading technology for children unless absolutely necessary. I managed to do higher level education while sharing old computers with basic internet for research.

Just bought a 5th generation Ipad 32gb the other day (the latest).

From the research I've done the best models to get are that one and the Ipad Air 2. Try getting a slightly used one off Ebay or Gumtree....like I did.

Ive had an iPad for about 5 years. Use it everyday. A lot! It updates to the latest iOS and it's as fast as it was when I bought it. Never missed a beat and never had a problem with it. I don't believe the old ones can't upgrade to the latest iOS? mine uploads it automatically and works all apps fine. If you're thinking about going Windows wait until they get rid of the rubbish they call Windows 10. Hopefully they'll start going backwards now back to good old 9,8,7, etc.

Had mine about the same length of time and it hasn't been able to update to the last few IOS update's....latest is IOS 11 which it cant update over to.

Which iPhones and iPads will (and won't) work with iOS 11?
