Renovating an IP bathroom this month. Looking to change out the old shower for a modern one. The width we have to play with is narrow by modern standards - 800mm instead of the 900mm that seems to be most common. Length isn’t an issue- can go to 1.1m.

Anyone have recommendations for a good quality shower base to use? Looking for low maintenance and longevity. Not interested in tiling the base.

Thank you for the quick reply - when the tenants move out I will go have another measure to see if we can fit this size in.

@Westminster - do you think this product will have good longevity? This is a long term hold property, so looking for something with the lowest ongoing maintenance.

I have tiled in our PPOR. It looks best and hasn’t leaked yet 3 years in. However I’m not convinced of the long term maintenance. The silicone gets mouldy and cleaning the grout (dark colour, so doesn’t show mould) is much more difficult than cleaning a base.

@Scott No Mates - do you think that despite the above, tiled bases will last longer?

If you choose a rectified tile in a large size you'll not have a lot of grout to get dirty.

@housechopper2 - if the waterproofing is applied properly (not rushed, to the required thickness, in accordance with the Aust Stds, corners properly treated) it'll last a long time without issues >10 yrs.

I agree with @wylie - use large tiles 600 mm minimum.

If your DIY-ing it, go an acrylic or polymarble. If your paying a reputable professional (with plenty of reviews, and has been trading at least ten years), go tiled. Tiled will last forever if done properly. Having said that a lot of trades don't follow the correct process. Don't attempt a tiled base DIY it will leak. We replace 150 leaking showers a year through our business- majority poor workmanship.
