At a recent Peter Thornhill seminar, he spoke about currency movements, so a $1 share may be less than $1 at points in the future, adding an element of complexity to the equation. Are these overseas shares providing something that domestic shares can't?

Buying shares in another country will reduce your overall portfolio risk.

It will also allow you to invest in industries that are not available on the ASX - luxury goods and big pharma for example.

The Australian market is a yield based one with lots of dividends. Many of the top companies have high payout ratios which tells me they are not growing. In the US it is the opposite and a lot of earnings are pushed back into building up the company. Everyone has been talking about Amazon - they don't do dividends and look where the stock is today.

If you want overall exposure to overseas shares you can go for a diversified approach and use a local ETF or managed fund e.g. Magellan Global.

If you want direct exposure to what you consider a winner e.g. Berkshire Hathaway or Amazon, Google etc. or any of the 2,000 ETFs listed in the US (there are less than 100 offered on the ASX) then you can invest in overseas shares via a platform like Commsec. I have invested in TenCent and Alibaba this way.
