No problem. I just worked backwards. A handyman may not (and should not) charge as much as an electrician or plumber. My brother charges himself out at $45 per hour I think (he needs to increase that), for yard work. He doesn't charge travel time to the jobs. So I'm making assumptions that may not be right.

I also find it hard to judge costs like this because hubby would be there doing it for free. So these types of jobs we've never had to pay for.

I agree that when broken down it may not be excessive, especially when you see the width of the door, and it seems this cupboard was made to take a dishwasher down the track, so probably there's not much fiddling around required?

Yeah it's difficult to judge what something is worth, I also just assumed he was a plumber as the quote is very vague and suggests "water & waste connection".

Water and wast connection could mean anything!

It's not the labour cost I'm concerned with, it's the materials. 225 dollars seems like a lot of materials. The hardware shouldn't cost much and I'm guessing the under sink drain waste will have a nipple he can drill out and connect the hose to... I really don't know as I'm not there unfortunately.

And I gave the bloke the chance to let me know the breakdown, but he decided not to do so. So I'm not left with much choice it seems. I should get another quote... which is somewhat a PITA.

Update: Not going to move forward with this handyman. Going to get another quote and see how it goes from there. Will post the new quote when I get it for future reference.

I always find asking how they approach the job and what is needed helps. They may explain its a simple job or why its a horrid job. Retrofitting anything will always be loads more effort v's a new DW in a kitchen made ready for one.

If there isn’t a dishwasher there then likely a new trap to the sink with dishwasher connection will need to be installed.

I've noticed most sink traps now have a special connection for a dishwasher. If they haven't they're about $10 from Bunnings.

    Update:
My PM asked another handyman to come and take a look and give a quote. 120 bucks.
    Says it's a simple job.

So one says it's complicated and will take all day while the other says it's simple. 660 v 120.

    Crazy...

I installed a dishwasher recently at a relatives house. They are super easy to do there are three things in place:
    A) a Powerpoint nearby
    B) a tap and sink/drain pipe nearby
    C) The cupboard being removed is 600mm wide or slightly wider

Kitchens from the 90's are often designed for a dishwasher, even if they don't have one.
