CPI or basket goods isn’t a great indication in my opinion, but of course that’s how it’s measured. I find raw materials, leading into manufacturing & goods is a much earlier indication. It takes time to filter through to the actual data when the end product that the consumer buys, goes up in price. As there’s often a huge supply chain to work through before you see it

Unless your in industries that manufacture or produce, you see it 1-2yrs before the general population does.

It doesn’t happen in a linear line. Takes awhile to catch up and creeps up on you. By the time you realise it’s too late which is why I believe we are experiencing pretty decent inflation right now. My opinion only

Food is still cheap, we are coming back from a drought with good crops.

Inflation might come from a low Aud.

In 12 months Steel is up 50% in some cases, aluminium 30%+, build costs 20-30%+, most commodities climbing higher, wages in anything productive or skilled are climbing, cars are well up, land is up, a ton of businesses are putting price increases through.

At least Aldi is cheap right? Lol

I think the commodity inflation will settle. People will plant more trees, mine more minerals etc. It's just a bounce back from the global lockdowns. The Fed's are saying it's temporary.

The annual inflation rate in Australia rose to 1.1% in Q1 2021 from 0.9% in Q4 and compared with market consensus of 1.4%. This was the highest reading since Q1 2020, amid a rise in tobacco excise; resetting of the Medicare and Pharmaceutical Benefits; the introduction, continuation, and conclusion of a number of government schemes; and home building grants.

Prices increased for food (0.7% vs 2.3% in Q4), alcohol & tobacco (7.9% vs 9.3%), furnishings (2.7% vs 3.6%), health (3% vs 2.6%), transport (0.4% vs -4.6%), recreation (1.5% vs flat reading), and insurance & financial services (0.6% vs 1.2%). In contrast, cost fell further for housing(-1.1% vs -0.9%), education (-0.1% vs 2.1%), and communication (-1.9% vs -2.7%). On a quarterly basis, consumer prices went up 0.6%, the least in three quarters, below forecasts of 0.9%. RBA Trimmed Mean CPI rose 1.1% yoy in Q1, the least on record, after a 1.2% rise in Q4. For some the end of civilization as we know it will happen if the price of chicken breasts reaches $10/kg. For others it is coffee exceeding $5/cup.

If you think Melbourne may have lost its mind recently, just wait till coffee prices rise.

Not sure if it is COVID-19 driven, my go-to cafe near home has put up the price of the fish and chips from $16.50 to $22 a couple of months ago. But I still go there once a week because the food is just irresistible.
